I had to quit drinking for health reasons, but damn if I don't appreciate an ultrahoppy brew. Terrapin's Hopsecutioner is... was a godsend. Unless this beer had the aroma of a freshly opened NES system, I doubt that it would bring me back to my days as a squirt playing Super Mario Bros. 2 (US), but I would try it.

concerning Mr. Splash, the Columbia versions appears to be really the original game, while the other versions are hacks containing levels built by BBS members, according to the website of the developer ( http://akiba.geocities.jp/consolehomebrewprogramming/download/index.html )
It was also distributed in form of Famicom carts, whose checksums (according to the developer website) match this set
Also available (in form of IPS patches from the dev) some hacks featuring alt. levels: Mondo21 hack, gg version & Meteor version
The variable is reset every time you clear a level (and a few more times just to be sure) as part of the usual clear-RAM routine, so it doesn't look like it.
Cool, it always felt to me that the slot machine minigame was way too short compared to SMB2.

I'm guessing there's no evidence of any object ever altering that "chances" RAM value?

Perhaps the coins won in the alternate dice game could have been used as additional tries for this?
I recall the Satellaview version would make you replay it until time ran out.
But obviously they probably didn't have that in mind when making the NES version.
I was streaming the corruption of some games and it turns out that there's code to let you replay the slot machine!

You get as many tries as that RAM address says until you either run out of tries or win, in which case it dumps you back to the map like usual.

Just goes to show you that even really popular games like this still have code paths we'll probably never know about.
The "Swedish Magazine" would be either Nintendo Magasinet or Super Play/Power Player (the rebranding of the mag when they branched out to cover non-Nintendo platforms).

As for actual pictures of this supposed Mario FX thing; NONE. Can't recall ever seeing anything there. I don't have all the mags, but I did have a subscription and I've posted lots of pics/scans of early and/or unreleased game footage from it here on the boards and other places.

Most of their "big" stuff came from either their own visits to electronic/game shows, Nintendo Power or several other larger magazines from different regions (such as Famitsu).

Pretty sure I've probably mentioned it before too, but if my memory serves me right regarding the whole "Mario FX" game thing, the rumor that was featured in some mags about it (with no accompanying pictures) was that it was a tech demo (platform "supposedly" being SNES) of a polygon Mario in some sort of open space/field/area/room that was able to interact with a box placed at the center of this play area.
That's very much true. When this thing first popped up, we had a hard time figuring out whether certain items and triggers just didn't work/exist or if they were just f-ing pixel perfect hard to interact with. (Everytime we did a rerun of it, we had to update the "This is how far you can play before it's broken beyond being able to progress" statement in our notes...)

Anyway, the coolest thing about this game is how absurdly identical it is to its PS1 counterpart under the hood. It is a creepishly faithful port, just with scaling/rotation of sprites being used for characters instead of a polygon engine and all that jazz.

Of course, sprite scaling and rotation on the GBC is a pretty big deal too.
