I've heard a lot of people bash the actual game, yet highly praise the mods and the game editor.

But for $2, you don't have much to lose.

Is there a playable demo out there? I had similar thoughts to Kitsune on the game when I read about it in some gaming mag. Also, if it's not an adventure game, then what is it?

I went to a hotel last month in Tampa that had one with N64 games instead. Pretty neat, but the price is a bit steep IMO.
