My guess is that the logo was a last minute thing, quickly made up for the promotional flyer. Square probably had made prototype boxes with another logo on them (or possibly they were undecided and made boxes with no logo), but right before the photographer showed up, they decided to change the logo. Therefore, like Kap said, stickers were made and hastily slapped on the boxes. If that's not the true explanation, then it's probably more believable. :)

You know, looking at the box even closer, everthing to the right of the vertical "GAMEBOYtm" stripe on the left is it's own sheet of art. You can tell with the purple line at the top, "The Search For Truth" and the little tear right below the "T" that it doesn't quite fit on the box.

So, this is what, a box (that does say FFLII on the side) with another sheet of promo art on top of it and then a sticker on top of IT. Weird.

I know, I know, this topic has been dead for a while. I just wanted to selfishly promote a little section I made to my site about this lost prototype. If anything you'll just get a good laugh from the pics I posted about the bad translation.

Just go to the "Special Final Fantasy" section and click on the FF2 prototype link. http://www.warmech.net

If something smells...

...it's usually the Butz.

Oh wait, not that Butz...

Your honor, this conversation is clearly irrelevant to the topic.

This was a very interesting article, and it's left me wondering about something. The "Download" link doesn't work -- when it did, was it the partial translation or just the Japanese version? According to Moriyama, the translation "works." Is there really a playable cart and/or ROM of their unfinished attempt? And if there is, how come nobody has it? ROMs never stay off the web very long, they just move.

Lots of people have it. It's in GoodNES, even. Look for "Final Fantasy II (U) (Prototype)".

Sorry about that. I've been meaning to post new download links for a lot of our stuff, but never seem to get around to it. Here's a copy of the FF2 localization.

It's possible that FF4 might have gone further than we realized:

I wonder if it was in any way similar to the mockup screenshot in the article? But that's probably unlikely.

Wow, that is pretty damn intriguing. I'm excited at the prospect of a "lost" Final Fantasy, but on the other hand, I doubt we'll ever see anything more out of this. :(

Kaoru Moriyama seemed pretty dismissive of the whole thing when I talked to her for my article, but on the other hand, as a translator she probably wasn't as heavily involved in the goings-on with game development. I've always held on to hope there was more to FFIV Famicom (as well as Seiken Densetsu FDS) than what she told me.

10 years later...

I just realized you were only a week off from the 15th anniversary of the original Famicom release.

The FC version is now 25, so I celebrated by playing the proto again.
