from 1989 to 1990, Nickelodeon had this 3 hour variety show on Sunday mornings called Total Panic.
They had these live action 'virtual' video-games like 'Eat A Bug'
(think PS2's eye toy on a huge screen) and Power Pad Pyramid that IIRC used the NES power pads.
anyway Total Panic was, to me, an awesome variety show that included videogame previews and reviews, including TurboGrafx-16 and Genesis which were both new at the time in the U.S.
I had a tape with a small amount of footage still there (most of it was gone) but the best of what remains on that tape are amusing previews of Sega Genesis Forgotten Worlds and, NEC TurboGrafx-16 R-Type.

it seems that i couldn't get it to play through FireFox, but with Internet Explorer it plays fine, yay!
there is not a whole lot, and the tape cuts off when they actually get down to 'review' R-Type, but not before a look at 4 of its levels.

when Total Panic was canceled by spring 1990, and after the re-runs ended, that was the end of my watching Nickelodeon. Nick crossed over into their era of 'complete crap', IMO, during the 1990s.
If anyone has more videogame footage from Total Panic, I'd be interested to see it. p.s. I'm *not* interested in that early 90s show, Nick Arcade, I thought it sucked and was highly annoying. |

I liked Nick Arcade because it was funny to watch those kids struggle to collect 20 rings in Sonic.
Never heard of Total Panic, but the guy who was playing Forgotten Worlds in the video is the coolest person in the universe. |

I'm pretty sure that's Greg Lee, one of the hosts of Total Panic.
regardless if that is actually Greg Lee or not, Greg Lee who hosted the show was also the voice of 'Doug' on Nick
as well as the host of "Where in the World Is Carmen Sandiego?"

this is what i would watch every sunday morning because:
it was epic in length
i had a hard-on for anything about video games
of course i watched video power too, in the afternoons.
they definitely did the power pad competitions. "Eat a Bug," the proto-eyetoy segment was pretty awful. "Eat a Bug" was also the show's most memorable feature.
It's possible that the final Nick Arcade sequences were born from evolving Eat a Bug based tech. That was what I assumed when Nick Arcade started airing.
Nick Arcade was a neutered shell of a show. The trivia segments were an obvious and shameful attempt at dressing the subject matter up with faux educational merit. What I wanted to see was game footage, game boxart, and announcers yelling titles of videogames and names of videogame publishers. What any kid wanted was to have Nintendo advertised at them in the most obnoxious way possible. That is the greatest joy we may know in this life. |

And an all-around creepy guy, if I may add. One time years ago I was down at Nickelodeon Studios in Universal Studios, Florida with my family and we went to see a filming of Family Double Dare. For whatever reason, he was there "working the crowd," trying to get everyone appropriately excited. Well, during the actual filming of the episode, he stood next to the audience's seating (which was in a kind of box-like thing), and I was sitting in the corner, right next to him. And he was talking to me like the whole time. And I remember being very weirded out by him. I can't remember exactly what he said, but I remember getting creeped out whenever I saw him on TV after that. |

it's amazing how many nuns are conversant in the dialect.
actually, kind of sucks that jive went away. it was pretty neat. I assume somebody has studied it and written a book. I don't want to read it, but I'd be glad to know it was there. |
