Man, this Virtual Console thing on the Wii is kind of a bummer, isn't it? Who wants to play classic, good games that they've already played before? Wouldn't you rather play a crappy game you've never heard of?

Well, now Lost Levels has given into your crazy, unrealistic demands! Today I present the first in our series of Virtual Console alternatives, Buzz & Waldog!

Buzz & Waldog is a cartoony platform game for the NES that was developed by Daou Infosys, a Korean company.

The game was going to be published by Innovation Tech, the publishing offshoot of a company called The Ultimate Games Club, which was a big mailorder game distributor in the early 90s.

If you can't tell by the screenshots, this game is actually really nicely made! It's colorful, it's fluid, and it's really fun. And, amazingly, this game was going to be released without a coveted (and expensive) official license from Nintendo of America, Inc., just like those Jesus games you might have accidentally gotten for Christmas. Were this released, I would easily call it the best unlicensed NES game ever produced.

The design makes me smike. It's like Daou sat around looking at Mario, Sonic and Bonk and said "okay, how do we combine these?" It works pretty well, and I'm pretty surprised at how nicely crafted each stage is. This isn't a throwaway game made on the cheap, this is the real deal.

Would you like to play it? Okay! Here you go.

What? You are too busy to play this game? Oh. I see. Well, do you want to just watch me play it instead? Sure, we can do that. Here are some Youtube links.

Really Cool. It looks a bit similar to one of the other games that Daou made on the Master System, Toto World. That game had plenty of ripped-off graphics too.

I'm guessing the infinite lives is a glitch?

$9155:AD 28 04 LDA $0428 = #$05
$9158:38 SEC
$9159:A2 01 LDX #$01
$915B:8D 28 04 STA $0428 = #$05
$915E:AD 27 04 LDA $0427 = #$00
$9161:A2 00 LDX #$00
$9163:20 45 C2 JSR $C245
$9166:8D 27 04 STA $0427 = #$00

Game Genie code OTSOPPXX if you want it off.
(for some reason, hacking anything in the ROM causes the game to barf in FCEUXD SP 1.06.)

I'm guessing it was left in for the sake of the reviewer.

Nice. Oddly on the game over screen, you see a name appear on top. When you lose as the first character it says "Koko". When you lose as the second it says "Suzi". Guess their names aren't Buzz and Waldog after all?

Also worth noting: Toto World 3 is what happened after Buzz & Waldog went unreleased and Daou began hating itself.

There's no fullscreen stretch that I can figure, it keeps fucking up the colours after five minutes at fullscreen, and it seems to have more problems with weird garbled tiles at the edges of the screen?

(I have now been told why it will only work with one emulator)

Shit I cannot get it to go on Mac OSX Nestopia, several versions.
I am trying to find the Mac OSX port of FceUltra but no luck.
My Acer laptop is being upgraded so all I can use is this Mac.

You have to compile the OS X FCEU. Mednafen too, but mednafen is in darwinports I've just discovered, so it's just a sudo port install mednafen away.

I ran the game on Mednafen with no troubles.

I really like this game. Too bad it didn't make it, as it was 90 times better than the crap that came from Color Dreams. Then again, no one would have probably gotten a copy even if it was sold seeing as to how the Ultimate Game Club was pretty much the BuyRite of the 80's/early 90's.

If you don't know how to/are too lazy to compile FCEUltra for OS X here's a link to a compiled version, and for you Intel kids, it's universal!

http://lamer0.com/files/FCEUltraOSX.zip

I've already tested it with this ROM and it works just fine.

I'd try it in FCEU, but the sound is always horribly offsync, I can't figure out how to fix it, if possible.

Sounds like a rather interesting Mario knock-off, for what its worth.

Good god.... Ichiban Crush is alive!

People still ask about you at the VGM forums ichi.

As for lost classics... well I still hope Nintendo wises up and starts releasing original content (or unreleased games) as they say they would a long time ago.

I'm using FCEUXD SP.
It's a variant with extra ROM hacking features, but it's much less laggy for me than the official FCEU.
