Has anybody tried hacking their way through this thing yet? It's pretty interesting! It's basically halfway between the U.S. and Japanese releases -- English text, Japanese voices, some badly translated/untranslated parts, and a few things that were dummied out of the final U.S. version. It's got the Nose Devil and the Pixie familiars, for one thing. Is there anything else different later on that makes it worth playing through the inverted castle?

I don't have that E3 version. But I have hacked the finished game with a gameshark. I was able to enable those unused familiars, along with a unused song. Lots of unused voice samples, I even seen a dummied out 5,000 treasure chest.

What, the buyer went and released it? I'm issuing this month's Lost Levels Hero Badge.

More findings! There's a forced game over after the werewolf/minotaur fight in the coliseum, but you can cheat past it with a Gameshark. I've gotten as far as the bad ending where you kill Richter, and right now I'm trying to figure out how to get one of the rings you need to get to the inverted castle. Apparently there's a switch missing in the part where you need a skeletal ape to break through a floor for you? Bastards!

This is different, though -- the familiars are actually findable in the game, and not just dummied/replaced like they were in the final. You need to cheat to get to the areas they're in, though.

I'm sure the GameShark could help you in that department, too. Are there any item modifier codes available for this game?

Nothing particularly interesting in the .ELF. Some references to a debug graphics mode, but the code for it seems to be missing. I'm actually surprised how little code it takes to run the whole shebang.

That being said, i've never played a castlevania game before...

I remember in the EGM2 strategy guide, there was a move listing for Richter. One of the moves was called "maelstrom," and it was something like Richter using a fish to attack an enemy.

...Yeah, I know that sounds strange, but it was accompanied by a picture. Supposedly it was a 360 motion plus attack. Can Richter do that in the version you're playing?

Are the Saturnish glitch levels still in there as in the released version? Are they the same?

I remember reading about that move, It was on some move lists on the internet for a long time. I tried several times to do it and wondered why it didn't work.

I imagine that it was removed for whatever reason. EGM2 also had the Pixie and Nose Demon familiar listed, so I was hoping that the move was also in the E3 version.

Nice! I've always wanted to play the game in English with the Japanese voices. I wonder how hard it would be to inject that into the final game.

I love the cheesy voice acting.

I always thought it sounded like a public washroom.

I played the E3 Version now for 2 days and found out interesting things. I made a little FAQ, I hope the english is good enough.

The most importent thing, the Save File is compatible with the Japanese Retail game. Yes we own it. So you can Load the game there, open 2 pathes and can near complete the game.
PS: I have done now the first castle (only some hidden rooms missing, which I have not found), so not sure about the second one.

Minor differences:
- E3 Version in the Titlescreen
- E3 Version Top Right on the gamescreen
- No Loading screen in the gameplay
- Japanese Voices and English Text
- Some voices and music missing and one dialog with Maria incomplete
- Japanese and English Place names
- When you die there is no Game Over but the message
To be continued... September 1997
_____________________________________________________

Note:
The Savegame is fully compatible with the Japanese Retail Version.
This will help you to complete the game.
_____________________________________________________

GAME:
You can normaly reach only 71% or a bit more for 2 reasons.
_____________________________________________________

1. Underground Caverns
At the Watefall top left the switch is missing.
So no Skeleton Ape will appear at the wood birdge and open the Abandoned Mine.

To avoid it:
Save, enter the Japanese Disc and load the game.
Then push the switch in the Japanese game and save the game.
Now insert the E3 Version again and play it through.
_____________________________________________________

2. Colisseum
After you defeat the Boss Minotaurus & Werewolf there is an ending.
To be continued... September 1997
So you can't get the Form of Mist which you need later for the Soul of Bat.

To avoid it:
Save, enter the Japanese Disc and load the game.
Defeat the Boss in the Japanese game and collect the Power Up and save the game.
Now enter the E3 Version disc and play the game through.
_____________________________________________________

Catacombs with no Return?
When you enter the Catacombs from the Abadone Mine you can't go back.
Reason, this is a Special Option from the Disc at the Start.

To avoid it:
Just use a Library Card.
Or save there, enter the Japanese Disc and load the game.
Then leave this place and save outside the Catacombs.
_____________________________________________________

THIS IS NOT TESTED FROM ME, JUST A GUESS
Special Start

It start at the Catacombs with no Return.
You have Lv.1 but much more HP and many Items.

When you can finish the Spike Room, you will maybe get a Library Card, in the normal game there is one.
Use it to leave this place.

Or save and enter the Japanese Disc and load the game.
Then leave this place and save outside the Catacombs.

Out of curiosity, has this game been leaked publicly yet?

Yes, like 5min after the purchase was made.

If I remember correctly, the rip came from someone who also had a copy who seemed surprised by the amount of money someone was willing to toss out the window for something that he was under the impression of being fully available online already. And thus upon noticing it was not the nr.1 hit on Google ended up ripping and uploading his copy of it.

Or well, at least something along those lines was written as the download information where I for entirely educational purposes acquired my test subject.

I got my copy directly from the guy who was surprised it wasn't already leaked. He said he wanted to put it out, but was waiting a bit. I wasn't sure if it was out yet or not.
