Alright, I can't take it anymore. I can't find any information on the new HeroQuest proto that went up for sale on ebay not too recently. Did it get dumped? or did the buyer lock it up forever in his basement? maybe it was all a hoax?

c'mon guys, fess up. one of you has to know something. =)

BTW, for clarification: It's not the same version of HeroQuest that TheRedEye got ahold of a while back, it's something much closer to what a retail version would be. No more one hit and you're dead. Menu's are different, a credit screen is in place, etc. (but, I don't know if there's any more incredible music that isn't in the first version).

The game is sitting in my game room on the shelf between Heavy Shreddin' and Heroes of the Lance. Some day Frank will probably be kind enough to put it up on the site. It is one of the best unreleased protos I have ever played.

Postermen, if you've beaten it yet.. does it still just reset back to main menu after the second "ending" screen, or does it have more in your version?

The only people who have a copy of the game are Postermen and The Official Lost Levels Staff. I can vouch for all of the staff being kind of lazy, particularly me. Can't speak for Postermen though.

Proabably because he has randomly walked into several of them in one swing.

Frank, please feel free to speak for me anytime, since I am usually too lazy to do it myself. Jeremy, I haven't finished the game yet. I kinda got tired of writing down the stupid passwords.

Who sold what now?

So, I wrote this game way back in 1991, and I thought I had the most recent version (the one I gave to TheRedEye). Is there really a more complete version out there? Is it something someone fixed up (I think I sent the source code to someone a while back too)?

Can I have a copy? Smile

hahaha, hi Chris! Yeah, I did find a more complete version, I was actually going to surprise you with a homemade cartridge. I was considering doing a more in-depth interview with you about the game for this site, if you're willing.

EDIT: And no, it wasn't "fixed up" by anybody, this was a magazine review cartridge that came from Spain. I think maybe you kept the wrong compile or something!

That's great! I was sure the game was pretty much done by the time I left England, and this sorta validates my fuzzy memories.

The source code I have, is actually dated later than the binaries I sent you, so you could be right about the old build. No way of compiling it though, without a bit of work or an old PDS setup Smile Anyone?

I'd love to see the Spanish binary you found. Outstanding stuff Laughing

An interview .. Hmm, would it involve pie?

Yeah, I actually had a couple oldschool NES programmers look at the source code (Andrew Davie and...someone else, I forget), and they both said they just didn't have the right tools to make any sense of it.

Too bad you didn't post a few days ago, I JUST came back from L.A. I totally would have bought you some pie.

I'll email you the binary. It's still in English, the only thing that makes it any different is that the music is timed for PAL frequencies, so it sounds a little fast by default. But if you use an emulator like FCE Ultra and turn on PAL Emulation, it slows down to normal. God, that soundtrack is awesome, too.

Oh, and you've been victimized by TWO of our word filters, in case you're wondering what's up with the random capitalizations.

They're ganging up on me! I did wonder for a moment, and then I simply assumed I was going mad.

Jeremy,

I just finished the game, I didn't even get a first "ending" screen. It just reset back to the first menu. Chris, Is there supposed to be at least some credits?

I was reading this conversation like it was new and shit until the end where I realized something was up.

So...does this story have a better ending than this cliffhanger?
