Wow, I never played Alien Hominid. I don't know how that happened.
Odin Sphere is great at first, but then you realize that the control is sluggish and the enemies are cheap and the story is an Idiot Plot and that you basically hate the entire game.
Gradius V is excellent. R-Type Final isn't bad, but it's not as fun as the previous R-Types.
I remember Sol Divide mostly because XS Games mangled it (and Gunbird) when they released it as a budget PlayStation title. The game sorta sucked to begin with, though.

If you're still counting portables, you're forgetting the awesome Guardian Heroes for the GBA. Treasure platforming at it's finest...
Holy shit, someone who's not me actually likes that game. Everyone complains about the slowdown and the way the game can kill you on the tutorial stage (if you're stupid), but the level design and overall variety are amazing.
Of course, I'm assuming that you didn't mean to type "Astro Boy" instead, which is closer to a platformer than Advance Guardian Heroes is.

Metal Slug 6 ALMOST nails what made the first few so fun, but then it turns to bullshit in the last couple of stages.

Well, that makes three of us, then. But I must say, being a huge fan of the original Guardian Heroes, that the sequel did not do it justice. I especially did not like the treatment AGH gave to the story, in that it sucked big time.
That said, and still in the subject of awesome 2D games, I encourage any of the two people out there that have a saturn, plus anyone with time, SSF and a decent PC on their hands, to try the first one out.
