You like seashell trannies.

Plus, why is there a boy named Nichol and a girl named Richie?

It's not bad, but it can't compare to the depth and drama of Eternal Sonata. I know TheRedEye will agree with me.

Is that the Chopin game where everybody looks like a bland, featureless doll without any interesting characteristics?

Too bad Mother 3 is only half as good as the first two games.

But it's still one of the most amazing games on the planet.

You honestly think Mother 1 is a better game than Mother 3?

I can see the argument for 2, but really, the NES game? You find random encounters every three steps and necessary grinding more compelling than the easy, musical flow of Mother 3?

Precisely my feelings about the Mother games. The first two have some delightfully funny moments in parodying the Dragon Warrior/Quest games, but the humor never cut through the tedium and excessive grinding of the early DQ games enough for me. M3 feels a lot more balanced difficulty-wise.

Mother's my favorite in the series. Yes, it's no secret that the random battles become a bugger, and the grinding can be annoying, but I think it has the best plot, the best soundtrack (if you ignore the technical limitations), the coolest towns, the best map layout (it's one huge world!), the best graphical style, and the best ending (at least the later versions), among others. EarthBound was my favorite from 1995 until last August, but after playing through Mother, it feels like a largely overlooked game just because of its sheer difficulty (which, truth be told, isn't even that bad, just tedious). It really sucks that Nintendo doesn't give it more attention, in both America and Japan.

I always wanted to ask this but never knew who to ask, its a little off topic though. On Mother 1 I read that it would detect if it wasn't in a true nintendo, or if it was running pirated and would crash near the end. That was hack fixed later, but I also thought it said the walking every like 2 or 3 steps was also that way because it was detecting it was pirated, but I never could get that confermed.

I don't think that's true. I'm pretty sure it was just key events in the game.

I could be wrong, but I believe Mother 1 does indeed have a screen which cropped up if the game detected that a pirate copy was being used. As for the crashing at the end, though, I believe that was Mother 2/Earthbound which had that as an anti-piracy measure, among other things like a heightened difficulty level. I think Starmen.net has articles about this stuff if you dig around a bit.

Yeah, when Pokey turns on the Devil Machine or whatever that thing's called in EarthBound, if you're playing a pirated copy, the game crashes and all your save files get deleted.

Convenient it's one of the scariest points in the game.

If it detects the copier-detection function has been modified, it puts assloads of enemies in the game. So many enemies you can't go far without bumping into them, and creating major lag while it's at it.

Did anyone ever find out what Earthbound Zero would do if it failed a copy protection checkpoint on a real cartridge? Would the cart really "no longer function," as it said?

If so, what happens? I'm guessing it messes up the SRAM or something.

(On topic: the first six chapters of Mother 3 make up what is probably the best game ever made. It kind of has a hard time ending itself after that, though.)

Do any other games mess around with you in a similar way? I've only ever heard of Earthbound doing it to you.
