I wrote a thing for 1UP. It's today's cover feature. Whoever did the cover art depicted me as Indiana Jones finding a Nintendo game, which is kind of awesome.

You should give it a thumbs up and comment on it because it makes me feel nice, and also because it will make me appear to be a popular author that should write more articles and get paid many dollars. |

Nice article (thumbs up, by the way). Now I just need to keep an eye on the Turkish Movie Market, 'caue I'll be waiting for the unofficial documentary of your life and exploits in the form of "Turkish Frank Cifaldi"

This sounds mysteriously like how things went down when I lost one of my sources of income. (Someone finally realized I did things remarkably well and thus should be handsomely rewarded for my actions. Unfortunately, replacing me instead of keeping me was a cheaper solution.) |

Excellent article for the masses to understand this niche of ours. Good stuff. Couldn't have said it all better.

That's a very benevolent and non-hostile article. |

I'm a little late in commenting, but I think its great you're writing articles on 1up. Good way to get more people aware of unreleased games. The Gimmick video you made was nice. Speaking of that, I noticed a very interesting observation one of the commentators (soylentx) said about the final boss being an action figure.
I always thought the final boss in Gimmick was pretty odd to say the least. Of course with the whole "dolls coming to life" storyline, I guess the final boss being an action figure makes perfect sense. I'm surprised it never occurred to me to think of him that way, that's actually pretty neat.
You should have mentioned that when the final boss kills you, he sometimes puts away his sword and walks off. That's another attention to detail in the game I like. |

Yeah, I saw the action figure comment too, it's been in the back of my head since then. I guess it's silly to try and make "sense" of Gimmick!, but it sure seems like there's something there. |

Just watched the first part of the Gimmick video. Lovin' it so far. But it sure is distracting me from stuff.
Also, nice to see some Sunsoft love. |

Really nice the Gimmick walkthrough. Thank you ( and thumb up ).
It would be nice if you update this thread when a new article is published ( maybe you already do it in another thread; I mainly visit the unreleased section ). |

I stumbled upon your Mr. Gimmick video from Reddit, it was really interesting. I never even knew about this game. |

I'm late to the party as usual, but I really like the article.
It makes me think about all the crap I have sitting in closets that's probably just going to get destroyed before it's properly preserves. I've spent too much money to give it away, but I don't have time or resources to archive it... I really wish there were a museum for gaming history where I could donate this stuff. |

There is a video game museum in New York, I believe. They bought Portnoyd's NWC cart. Apparently everything is available to researchers. |

I know the guy who runs it pretty well, are you going to GDC Ace? I can introduce you. |

Unfortunately not. I can't swing any of the game conferences this year.
Some of this stuff is getting too fragile to transport anymore. When I went to MGC last year one of my PS2 TOOLs and a hand built saturn prototype were destroyed in transport. I bought a CD-I dev kit a few years back that I'm too afraid to power on, I don't know if there's anything on the hard drive or not... |

I enjoyed the article very much. Although i wouldn't agree on calling preservation 'piracy'. Piracy in my eyes is the illegal distribution of games (or other intellectual/artistic properties) that are in their commercial and legal life-cycle. Since the unreleased games didn't get the chance to be commercially released i wouldn't label it that term. I guess it also requires a certain discipline to keep the discretion of a complete or nearly complete product in your hands while it isn’t officially released, yet. But there are also examples i guess, of companies that leak their stuff on purpose to fuel the game's hype. The developer or publisher (on agreement with the developer) has got the 'licence', right to do that, the journalist doesn't.
To summarize : Piracy is something that brings the developer and it's publisher into creative and financial disadvantages. Since 'lost' games are games that deliberately weren't released, they therefore cause no disadvantage to the developer and/or it’s publisher, i don’t see it as piracy. It would be if the code was of main interest by it's creators. The same applies to unreleased versions whenever they are in alpha or beta stages. Unofficial released codes are therefore extremely interesting, people love things that are hard to get. It's an 'underground' kinda thing really, adoring and most importantly respecting stuff that didn’t surface.
Nevertheless, a very well-written article. Congrats.
