http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&Item=110544576868

This was found in VideoGameMuseum Blog while I was viewing the review on another prototype.

It has a lot of special differences from the final, A nurse and a dog character that actually was removed from the final are in it.

Plus, it is a 5-screw, Very rare in NES games, But has 4 screws still intact (Example, Some Punch-Out Carts)

If someone were to buy, dump and examine this, Submit it to The Cutting Room Floor. Now is the chance!!!

The auction ended 11 days ago, dude.

Why does the number of screws matter? Most protos were just put in whatever cart shells the developers could find.

I agree.
The number of screws in the cart has to be one of the dumbest reasons I've heard for collectors inflating the value of their carts.

Yeah, um. It ended long ago.

I seem to recall seeing this before months/years? ago, but the auction poster says he "found it at a flea market". Now if only I had the old pictures as a comparison...

Eh, whoever bought it, hopefully it gets a release. :|

There are two copies. The first was purchased by a user named Hilmarf for $500 and sold very shortly after to Van Halen for $1.5k. Unlike the one that recently went up for auction, the first proto was on an MMC1 board, just like the retail version of Dr. Mario. The most recent auction is a proto of Virus on an NROM board.

The last cart was won by Van Halen as well (I was the second highest bidder), and seeing as he hasn't released the first copy he bought several years ago, I doubt he has plans to release this one.

What's the best way to reach Van Halen? Through NintendoAGE?

Unlikely, he rarely posts over there and goes by a different user name (Johan 1984). He doesn't advertise the fact that owns either one, I was told by Hilmarf when he sold his copy to Johan and I was able to see the winner of the EBay auction using the search users by bidding history function.

He's a quiet collector who loves first party NES protos, but you may be able to get a hold of him if you try.

Edited for spelling error.

Oh, Drakee. That'd be AC/DC.

van_halen posted a ton of screenshots of his Super Mario Kart prototype, so I imagine he would do the same with Virus provided he wasn't hastled by ROM kiddies.

Kind of greedy to buy another copy of Virus, when he already had one himself. Hope he considers selling one of them in the future at least.

He's in a tough position though. He spent $1.5k on the first copy when it was the only known. If I had won this copy (again, I was the second highest bidder at $2.3k), I would inevitably release the ROM, and his cart would decrease greatly in value.

Now, I'm not saying he is looking at it from an investment standpoint, but if he wanted to buy a Virus proto AFTER it had been dumped, it would likely only cost him $300-$500 tops.

To each their own, I'd likely do something similar if I were in his shoes.

Yeah, I don't know if I'd call not throwing money away "greedy."
