The Saint Seiya 1 translation was based on the French version.
I remember when I first released, I released an additional IPS that merely turned the Famicom ROM into the French ROM.
It was large (the Famicom version uses mapper 152 (unnamed?) while the French version was MMC1), kinda pointless once the ROM was more widespread, and really not much different than posting a hacked ROM, so I removed it.

Did KingMike post in the correct thread? What's this about Saint Seiya?

Anyway, this game tortured me as a kid. I made it to level 16 ONCE on my own (never made it even close again...maybe level 10 or 11), after playing the game for 3 years (way back in the day). I used to nag the NOA gameplay counselors if anyone there had beaten it. One girl asked around and found out that no one had, and that some thought one guy did, but didn't work there anymore, and no one knew his name, so he probably didn't exist. And yes, I do believe she actually got up and asked around and the general consensus was the game was just too hard.

Anyway, back when the Game Genie was illegal (NOA fought Galoob in court to get it banned, and did for a year? Two years?), I begged my mom to order one from Canada for X-Mas. I still remember it was $127 shipped (2-day air, Fed Ex). I was seething with excitement to own this magical device, as NO ONE had one back then in the states, at least no one I knew of. I still remember how incredibly excited I was to get this. I literally don't think I could have been happier if you had given me a chest full of jewels. I was gonna unlock some goddamn secrets with this sumbitch!

I remember when the FedEx guy arrived and I opened the package, messily. I hoped my mom wouldn't notice. It was December 23rd. I knew she ordered it, because I was next to her on the phone when she did it two days prior. It's not like I didn't know what it was when it arrived. She was still pissed I opened it before XMas. Can't blame her, and I knew it was wrong, but my desire to actually hold a GG in my hands and use one, AND finally see the ending (if any) to Star Force was truly too much, and I really couldn't hold on to my morals at the time. I really couldn't!

To be honest, I can't remember any time in my whole life I was ever that excited to get a gift, knowing I was getting it, in my whole life.

However, I HAD to know if Star Force had an ending. It was tearing me up for years, that this was basically the only game I couldn't beat. I had even tried for days to discover cheat codes for hours using random button combos and system frying, ala VCS (hey, a version of frying worked on Zanac).

I remember seeing in the back of the instruction manual for Star Force an ad for Super Star Force, which never made it here. The irony is that only the US version of Star Force has an ending, iirc, and it tells you to look out for Super Star Force, COMING SOON! The Japanese version had no such ending, I think.

One thing I found very odd was that the US GG codes don't work on the JP one. I even tried finding equivalent values at different addresses, but it seemed the whole game code was different. Usually porting a GG code from one version of a game to another is as simple as hacking can get, but not on this game. I couldn't figure out why. Anyone know?

Anyway, thought I'd share my Star Force story.

I still regret that I've never beaten that game legitimately and never will. I tried so goddamn hard too....not because it was a good game, but because it nagged me and defeated me over and over.

-Rob

That....was a very entertaining, informative, and generally awesome trip down early 90's memory lane.

Interesting. I beat a pirate version and it just went straight to the Infinity level, iirc. Also, that wording is quite different than the USA ending.
