Is there release date data out there for Japanese Game Boy games like there is for Famicom, where we know specific dates? There doesn't seem to be one in English but maybe one is out there untranslated?

I have a Japanese "GB 1236 titles" book that lists all Japanese releases chronologically, but it doesn't include US or EU releases. (They also totally forgot the game "X" in their list!)

Anyway, what do you need it for?

Nothing in particular really, I just want to explore the Game Boy library since it's almost entirely foreign to me, other than the games I owned as a kid. That Japanese Wikipedia page is exactly what I was hoping for! That combined with the official (inaccurate) NOA list and some research figuring out which games were not released in either region should give me a good starting point.

Getting into the GB library, eh? Here are a few that I recommend: http://www.chrismcovell.com/gbgems.html

And I've been doing a trickle of work on an unfinished page that shows statistically how the GameBoy market started out with a deluge of puzzles, quickly overcame this deficiency and hit its stride, then turned completely to shit under the sheer weight of licensed dreck and Red/Green/Blue/Diamond/Asbestos varieties of the same crap games.

Enjoy your trek!

Dammit, I shouldn't have looked at that. Now I want to hack a couple of those into English.

What's the point? They have almost no ingame text anyway. A title screen-only hack is a waste of everyone's time to download.

What's the full title of CA DA translate to?
That's gotta be one incredibly long name.

Them Japanese letters offend my American sensibilities! I demand bland and meaningless American titles!

What the hell is a "Chalvo", anyway? Just call it "RollerBot" and give the guy a couple of guns. It'll sell like hotcakes!

...okay, I'm done. Razz

Man, Trip World is pretty neat. It's a little like Gimmick but with easier control. No surprise, since Tomomi Sakae worked on both games.

Other overlooked Game Boy games: Battle Bull, Avenging Spirit, Mole Mania, and Cosmo Tank.

And maybe Bionic Commando, too. I actually like it better than the NES version!

is this thread about soliciting recommendations, or do you want to discover everything on your own?

you know, i was really hoping someone would do a chrontendo style analysis of the game boy. looking forward to reading this.

Sure I'll take recommendations, but mostly I want to explore on my own. No way in hell am I doing Chrongameboy, I have way more social obligations than Dr. Sparkle so I wouldn't ever be able to keep up.

That sounds like a highly interesting read. Looking forward to it.

Publicity! A ROM translation puts the spotlight on a game like almost nothing else.

Also, Cosmo Tank! And don't forget Revenge of the Gator.

Love Revenge of the Gator. HAL's spiritual prequel to Kirby's Pinball Land, it is.

And both games actually had a plot, albeit a thin one. They weren't just title hacks! What's more, King of Demons actually has two endings.

I always liked Rainbow Prince. but that's probably just me. its a really weird Taiwanese Twinbee clone (and as such you'll probably never ever find it on any release list ever)

Okay, I finished up my nice (and downbeat) article about the Game Boy:

Enjoy!
