Skrybe and I recently acquired some VidPro retail display cards for a few unreleased NES games. They're in rough shape, but considering this art might not exist anywhere else, we'll take what we can get! I posted them all on Retronauts as one of my "Lost Levels" columns here:

http://www.1up.com/do/blogEntry?bId=9011894

Skrybe and I both have a couple more cards for released games with slightly different layouts from the final boxes too. I haven't scanned mine yet, but I will soon.

Man, I never knew Ultimate Journey got to the box-art stage. It came so close to being sold at Toys R' Us, where I would've ignored it until it hit the $20 rack.

Pyross/Wardner is an interesting find, since Taito apparently went through the trouble of converting a Famicom Disk System game to the NES before they canceled the title.

You know Frank, if you want a better recoloring of the Ufouria cover, I still have the original PAL region box (and working scanner). Only difference is the inclusion of the Mattel logo.

This place shows an auction for a lot of those display cards for unreleased games in top shape:

And this Flickr set has all of the unreleased games in that lot scanned at super high res, which the seller very graciously did for me yesterday:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/lostlevels/sets/72157622937313542/with/6854708478/

(the set also has my own shitty sun faded scans, and scans from another recent lot - these are all the known unreleased NES VidPro scans)

Actually I meant to post that lot here earlier, I'm glad you did: do you guys want to go through the list and make damn sure we've got all the unreleased ones scanned? I tipped him off to Fun House, and we've got that, do any of the others pop out? Maybe on Game Boy or SNES?

I could be mistaken but I believe these are scans of all the unreleased game VidPro cards currently known to EXIST, which is pretty cool. You'll note that I've included every scan made of every card, in case one has better colors or cropping or whatever than another.

Thanks to coinheaven from thenesdump.com we have a few more in the set, including Super Turrican and Hit the Ice cards that are new to me and some upgrades from my previous shitty sunfaded scans (the colors on these could be vibrant with some simple photoshop correction, but I wanted to keep this archive restricted to the original full res files).

ha! those faded ones came from "cheapgamestuff" aka Ultimate Gameplayers club or whatever in either CT or VT. There was a rumor that the owner of the Old Saybrook, CT (my boyhood home) store was busted for "something" back in the day. I cant remember if it was true or not so Ill assume it was a rumor but the store did sit there boarded up for years and years.

Ultimate Games Club, that's right. Little known fact: Ultimate Games Club was also a games publisher called Innovation, they were the guys that were going to release Buzz & Waldog and Street Hero on the NES (and Dooley the Dinosaur on Game Gear).

Well thats quite interesting! Most would not think so, but Connecticut had quite a few publishers. I know the unreleased Swamp Thing and Ball Benny (not the exact name I think) genesis prototypes were developed by a CT company (the name I can not remember at the moment) and the prototypes were found at a local tag sale.

UGC also had so many complaints from customers about their service and policies back in the day that one of the game mags (GamePro? VG&CE?) decided to stop running their ads until their reputation cleaned up.

I think it was actually EGM, believe it or not. They printed some letters from folks that never received their ridiculously overpriced imports and that was that, no more UGC advertising.

yeah, the rumor back in the day was that the owner was busted for piracy and actually did jail time. I asked my older brother if he recalls anything about that as he was in his early 20s then and a hardcore gamer, as far as he remembers the rumor is true.

Apparently Super Turrican has "3-D graphics".

Maybe that was only for the cancelled US release ......... Cool

I have the guy's email address (we talked a bit a long time ago), but it would be kind of awkward to ask.

Yes, there is a released PAL version of Super Turrican, published by Imagineer. But Seika's NTSC version was unreleased.

Yeah, I'm making a joke. I played the PAL version and didn't see any "3-D graphics" Wink

That sure sounds a lot like the "repro" selling stuff that's going on lately, just using a different word.
