Nintendo Player has featured its fair share of wild prototypes in the past, but none have been as outrageous as this: a vulgar, uncensored version of the Super Nintendo classic, NBA Jam. This prototype has to be seen (or, rather, heard) to be believed.
Check out the full article for all of the trash talk and then watch the NSFW video on YouTube!

I had to jump through several hoops to finally get permission to have this prototype released. The contributor of NBA Jam XXX went to great lengths to keep their identity a secret, so let's respect their privacy and give our thanks by simply playing and enjoying this wonderfully filthy game.

Aside from the obvious changes to the announcer, was there anything else of note that was different?

I haven't played it in a while, but I remember it being an unfinished version of the game.

Oh, I remembered wrong, article says otherwise.

According to Kotaku, Tim Kitzrow has no memory of recording these lines. I'm more inclined to believe he forgot rather than their conclusion (that it's a forgery).

I read another blog's post about this on tumblr and someone commented that Tim said he didn't remember... though the video and the ROM are out there, so I'd conclude that he just forgot.

EDIT: So I guess the ROM doesn't work on ZSNES?

The ROM works on SNES9X.

For better or worse, I've always used the word "prototype" as a catch-all to describe any legit game contained on dev hardware. Like, for example, one of the upcoming SNES proto articles was going to be about Harvest Moon. Even though it's most likely a magazine review copy because the code is identical to retail, for organizational purposes, it's simpler for me to classify the game as a prototype with no differences.

People on YouTube are saying that the "clean" voice-overs are still in the game code right alongside the curses, and that this was made sometime between the 1.0 and 1.1 retail versions because Charles Barkley's stats are featured with Dan Majerle’s sprite and name during gameplay (Barkley was removed from later copies of NBA Jam because he signed on to star in his own video game, Barkley Shut Up and Jam!).

Thanks to some good investigative journalism by Danny Gallagher at Game Trailers, more of the story comes out:

Quote:
Mark Turmell, a former creative director at Midway and senior creative director at EA who now works for Zynga, created the iconic arcade sports games that helped build Midway Sports through the 1990s and 2000s. He also helped bring the series back to our consoles with recent relaunches of NBA Jam, NBA Jam On-Fire Edition and NFL Blitz.

He said through a conversation with Side Mission on Facebook that he saw the video the other day and recalled doing some similar audio recordings with voice actor Tim Kitzrow during the development of the arcade game.

"I can confirm that in the early days we did record tons of off-color stuff," Turmell said.

Lines like "Get that **** out of here" and "He's on ******* fire" were recorded when they worked on the arcade version of the game for Midway. Turmell said they actually tried to put the "Get that **** out of here" line into the final version with a "bleep" sound over the offending word, but the NBA objected and it was removed.

None of the other salty lines made it in the game, but Turmell said there were recordings and Acclaim Entertainment, the studio that worked on the SNES version, had access to all of their arcade audio archives. He said he wasn't present during Acclaim's recording sessions with Kitzrow.

"We all laughed at the various lines, so it'd be no surprise if they made a custom EPROM version," Turmell said. "Not ROM though, because that would have been manufactured."

Turmell couldn't definitively say if the video that surfaced yesterday came from those sessions, something that Kitzrow denied to Kotaku because "Jam was too big to have ever messed around like that." We also reached out to Kitzrow through his email and Facebook for comment on the video and Turmell's recollections.

He does, however, have an opinion on the video's authenticity.

"I believe it's legit," Turmell said.

UPDATE: Kitzrow sent us an email after this post ran that he doesn't remember recording any of the dialogue in the recent video but notes that long hours can take its toll on any project and may have led to some joking around in the recording studio. He also said he never knew or heard of anyone from Acclaim taking such recordings and turning them into a workable game.

"Really don't have any recollection of anything like that ever existing…there are times when the hour is late in the studio that we kid around and yes as in any recording studio or on any job for that matter, I'm sure there were some off color moments but as far as an 'R' rated game ever existing I highly doubt it…sounds like a hack job of some sorts to me."

I can't figure out Kitzrow, but I truly hope Kotaku reads this and does an update. I've been getting a lot of flak and e-mails because of Mr. Schreier's post.

My guess is nobody wants to own up to the fact this thing happened... like the way the donor of the cart didn't want to be identified either.

While I didn't tell them, somehow I knew it wouldn't take kotaku long to find out and post about something like this.
Stuff that gets on kotaku tends to get a lot of press.

I'd say "R-rated NBA Jam" would be more apropos, but I suppose that makes for a less provocative headline. Nonetheless, I've always been a big fan of NBA Jam, and it is fascinating to see this come to light. It was certainly gracious for the parties involved to make this possible.
