SDCC: Capcom Announces Strider HD
New title coming from Double Helix.

by Andrew Goldfarb
July 18, 2013

During a panel at San Diego Comic-Con today, Capcom announced a new HD game in classic arcade series Strider coming in early 2014. The title will simply be called Strider and is being developed by Double Helix for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC.

Strider "tells the story of Hiryu, the youngest ever 'Super A' ranked agent of an elite corps known as the Striders. Strider Hiryu receives orders to assassinate Grandmaster Meio, supreme dictator of Earth, who has plunged humanity into a dystopian dark age."

Capcom reports that Strider will feature "an ultra-responsive control system, with incredibly satisfying combat options in every traversal context—standing, running, wall climbing, hanging, aerial and more." It will also offer "the massive interconnected world of Kazakh City which players can explore in any direction they choose. The traditional level structure has been replaced with a retraceable world and a deep ability upgrade system which enables Hiryu to build more power and abilities to penetrate ever deeper into the dystopian adventure."

Capcom announces brand new sidescrolling game due for release in early 2014 on next-gen and current-gen; Double Helix developing.

Today at San Diego Comic-Con, Capcom announced an all-new "2.5D" sidescrolling Strider game for early 2014.

In development at Double Helix, the game is coming to next-generation machines the Xbox One and PlayStation 4, as well as Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC (through Steam).

"The year is Meio: 048, and Hiryu, a young but deadly assassination expert is out to eliminate Grand Master Meio," reads the game's description.

The new Strider game was described as brand new and nonlinear with a Castlevania: Symphony of the Night-style structure.

In a post to Capcom's blog, the company said the new Strider will feature "high-speed Cypher combat," as well as various unique Cypher abilities that players can earn throughout the game. The game will also see the return of robot allies, Capcom said.

Developer Double Helix is also behind this November's Killer Instinct for Xbox One.

I can't see any of the bullets... I hope the particle effects and explosions and stuff can be turned down or off, and the bullets get bigger or backgrounds get less busy.

Also I hope the final version has voice acting in like 6 different languages.

I wish I could be more optimistic about this, but the developer Double Helix, doesn't have a very good track record with its games.

I at least enjoyed Front Mission and Silent Hill Homecoming. They weren't exactly super memorable or anything, but they were enjoyable and delivered on what I expected.

Personally, I don't think Strider ever was "all that" either. Perfect fit if you ask me. Not every "classic" getting remade/sequelized was a million seller that's universally loved by everyone, and I don't think every modern release needs to be a top rated beast either (except from ... for like ... for modern development costs and sales reasons and all that, 'cause stuff costs money and what not :/ )
