What a great article!!!!

I wonder if the actual original rom dumps are still out there? I can find EarthBound but can never tell which version it is.

If you're looking for the original, unhacked, Nesticle-locking version, you can pick it up at my page. Look in the Unreviewed section.

A great piece of Journalism on my favorite subject. Video games.

I hold a dear spot in my heart for electronic gaming and to have it taken to such a serious and professional level is gratifying. As much as there is the needed money of the adamant and stubborn fanboys, for every system, genre, and decade of gaming so far, it is the intelligent gamer behind the scenes that allows for true progress in the field.

Though I did notice some of the slapstick in the forums and all I have to say is, I laughed pretty hard at some of those posts.

This is a great site and I plan to contribute as much as I can.

But what the hell is this GRATE stuff? Who's (or what's) getting ripped on?

But GRATE Doesn't Even Compare to "Oh My God! They're Not Even Human", though.

GRATE is a pun that was spawned in the NES prototype game "Sunman". When you finish a level, the screen displays "GRATE! SUNMAN". Or something like that.

Oh I get it, it's ENGRISH.

Hah, while we're off-topic, I recognize Smeg as the (in)famous Mark Discordia.

The article is certanily outstanding, and answers a whole ton of questions.

I'm a huge Mother/Earthbound fan. I own loads of Mother 1+2 items from the games release. It still continues to astonish me why Nintendo did not decide to release the game, it's translated, and Japan even had a Mother 1 OST soundtrack. Which all the lyrics were sung in English. It's also great cheesy 80's music.

Earthbound could of been a huge cash cow for Nintendo, and I hope that NOA will decide to release Mother 1+2 in English form.

Thanks for the great article, and keep up the great work.

FYI: Another earthbound proto has been found! (lots of info over at DP including pics!)

I wonder if the ROM content is identical to the one in this article.

Is that the real deal, or just the ROM dumped onto a blank cartridge, or what?

It's real. And totally overshadowed by the Campus Challenge cart found at the same time.

Not sure exactly what you mean by "original," but yeah, the "Zero" on the title screen was something hacked onto the initial public release of the ROM by Demi. Seems like there's two versions of that release as well, one where the only change was the "Zero" added to the title screen, and a version released a little later that hacked something to bypass the "warning" screen.

The ROM without the Zero text is the original clean dump.
