Looks like a Mac-based X-Box, well before Microsoft thought of a PC hardware console design.
Entirely unrelated, but this bit on the page caught my eye:
Quote: | ...approximately 46-51% of the adults resident in the U.S. are considered functionally illiterate...When I brought this up to a Japanese executive with Bandai, he just could not understand that Americans might not be able to read. Talk about a cultural gap. |
A cultural gap? I'm American and I can't understand it either. |

The Pippin had several strikes going against it...
The major one being price, the second being hardware.
The Pippin was based on first/second generation PowerMac hardware which by 1996 was beginning to be outdated. From what I can find out on the Internet, the graphics subsystem on the Pippin was no match in some aspects, for the consoles of that era.
If you do research about Pippin you'll find that Apple was pretty mum about it's 2d/3d capabilities, or should I say lack there of. |

Apple always makes crap. Better than Windows and PC's, but still crap. Now the Amiga CD32 on the other hand... :) |

X, are talking about the CD32 vs the Pippin or Amiga vs everyone else?
Amiga did do some cool things back in the day. However,
like so many non-Wintel platforms, Amiga just couldn't
keep pace with Wintel evolution throughout the late 90's. |

Amiga Marble Madness was better than Commodore 64 Marble Madness.
That's all I've got. |

Well I ment CD32 VS Pippin, but now that you mention it, the only thing that kept Amiga from keeping Winblows out of the picture was bad marketing, money mangement, and late investments by Commodore who never was too good at running a business.
Windows brought nothing to the table, nor did Mac OS (pre-X). They both ripped ideas off Amiga left and right, had Commodore ran a better ship, OS's as we know them would be completely different, and lightyears ahead of where we are now. I mean crap, it took Mac and Winblows years to get TRUE multi-tasking, and they did it oh so poorly to (pre-OSX).
Also Microsoft has neglected there crappy file systems for years. Another thing Amiga was always good at, not to mention graphical hard drive segmenting and formatting.
All at evern 256k or RAM on up, preferably about 32Mb minimum now a days with the internet and all, but still....
...also you can still isntall the OS manually. |

I'll have to do some research on the CDTV, but I'm pretty sure a Pippin would have owned it...
I don't know enough about Amigas yet to make
a judgement. I've read that Toolbench had a lot
of firsts, but wasn't the friendliest app to use.
I guess it's time to hit the Internet. |

Ya the hard drive frgamenting and formatting tool was not the easiest in the world, but it was easier for a computer virgin to pick up on than command line. I always used 3rd party formatting tools on my Amiga though, which were infact REALLY easy.
Anyhow, here is a short little review of the latest beta of Amiga OS 4 which has an interesting little tid bit on the hitory of Amiga:

Yah, I already read that article over at Ars, it's interesting to see
Amiga try to resurrect itself, again.
Isn't there someplace on the internet that someone
could buy a legal Amiga/Commdore emulator? |

Ya...
www.amigaforever.com/
Need a decent PC and Winblows to run it well though...
...and of course it is good, but no where near as fluid as the real deal. None the less, totally worth while if you want to check out some old games, and get a small idea of how the OS worked...
...but alas, not as fluid as the original I say. :)
Also if you want legal and free ROMS, this page has all the "old school stuff" or at least a large chunk of it.

Of course I must add that Amiga once again is DOOMed to bad marketing, and being WAAAAYYYY over priced. They should just port the OS to the Mac Mini (the pippin 2) at least, and get it over with.
The price of the new Micro Amiga is 3 times that of the Mac mini, and still it is not as up to date. Something is seriously wrong with this picture. :(
I know the company is small, and therefor must charge more in the get go to get there feet on the ground, but honestly, designing the new Amiga OS to ONLY run on waaayyyy over priced out of date hardware is not a very logical approach in my opinion. I don't see why businesses would want to invest in it, let alone you commen family or consumer. |

Speaking of the XBox...
I'm absolutely sure that Bill Gates was quoted somewhere (in a PC magazine, perhaps) as saying that home consoles wouldn't last, and that computers would eventually replace them as peoples' primary source of interactive entertainment. However, I don't know where I saw this quote, and now I can't find it! Does anyone remember this?

Thanks for the links X, I knew I saw that somewhere
on the Net.
Speaking about hardware prices, it's true.
I might be willing spend a couple of hundred dollars
on a new Amiga system, but not much more then that.
On the other hand, no system will be ever be cheap as
a DIY PC. Techreport.com did a comparison of a DIY PC
vs the Mini Mac, using similar hardware, and the PC still
came out cheaper.
Mane, Bill G. has said that several times the last ten years
about several different technologies. He was wrong this
time. |

Ah, christ.
You have to realize, yes, if you build it yourself (or even buy a shitty eMachine), that a pc with comparable specs will be a little cheaper than the Mac Mini. If you care about footprint, the amount of noise, the bundled software and the OS, then the Mac Mini all of a sudden is a better deal.

Kap your being sarcastic aren't you? The mini Mac
doesn't even come with a keyboard or mouse.
While not bank breaking, it does add around 30
to 50 dollars to get a good mouse and keyboard. |

(your != you're)
No, I'm not being sarcastic. You are clearly not thinking, however.
The point of the Mini Mac or whatever the fuck it's called is to get people to switch over to a Mac platform. You're whining about the keyboard and mouse costs when a monitor is CLEARLY far more expensive. If you're going to whine about most people not having a usb keyboard AND mouse, you can get a usb to ps2 adapter for far, far cheaper than the cost of both, and I would argue that most people already have at least usb mice to begin with.
(Also, what fucking PC user doesn't already own a good usb ps2 mouse? Don't whine about a computer not coming without a mouse when everyone buys their own anyway, and I'd be willing to be the same argument applies to the keyboard. Considering the goddamn Mini doesn't come with a monitor either.. oh for fuck's sake, use your head. SECOND COMPUTER.)
Please, let's not continue this particular discussion here, some Apple.Slashdot comment section would be a far better place to do it. I totally don't feel like arguing with people on subjects where their minds are already made up. |

Kap, my comments about you being sarcastic come from the last
line of your last post. I thought you were trying to flame bait us
into a massive fanboy argument.
Yes, I know the mini Mac doesn't come with a monitor. I
guess the reason I didn't mention the monitor is I have a
second monitor lying around. Everytime I destroy/rebuild
a computer, the monitor seems to be the only component
I have extra, lying around.
The mini Mac is not a bad idea, it's fairly good one. It's
just no matter how hard a company tries, no one will
ever be cheaper then a DIY PC if you don't mind the
case size, fan noise, and over all foot print of the system.
About software, if you don't like what Apple cranks out for
the Mac, you're pretty much screwed. On the PC at least
you have choices. |

There are several different linux PPC distros for Mac hardware, actually. You do have a choice, that choice just doesn't include Windows, and typically if you buy a Mac it's because you didn't want Windows to begin with.
Agreement about the DIY bit, but the other bits ARE a factor. I've built myself plenty of computers over the years, but I still want a Mini for most of the above reasons.
Yay for conversation :) |
