dont get me wrong, the new rygar was cool...but i think it was still a little 'dumbed down' regardless. i think we're all kinda in agreement of that...

I was kinda upset about the music in the new one.

And that also brings me in on one of those odd subjects I've kinda been wondering about since I first was introduced to it:
-Why on earth did Rygar get an altered soundtrack during localization on the NES? (I liked it, but I just find it odd that out of all things to change, they changed the soundtrack)

Also, showing the Bionic Commando trailer to my brother has made him start another replay of it.

Contract dispute with the original composer, maybe?

My guess would be something to do with the differences in the sound chips between the Famicom and NES.

I know of no significant differences between the chips of the two machines - if you suppose that as the reason, it implies that every non-modified Famicom-to-NES soundtrack had to be rewritten to run on the NES, which borders on ridiculous. Now the Famicom's sound chip did allow memory mapper chips on cartridges to add additional sound of their own, which wasn't possible on the NES. Rygar was not one of the games to use such a chip, though.

Red, your idea seems mistaken to me because as far as I know Capcom didn't use contractors for audio in the NES days - they had an in-house team to cover everything. That being the case, the composer shouldn't have any rights to the music he created for a game.

Rygar wasn't Capcom!

Alternate theory: licensed music?

Er, yeah, I knew that. Bionic Commando thread and all. I think the same objection probably applies to Tecmo too.

What source might they have licensed music from? Japanese pop music? Having just now played a bit to compare the two, my prevailing theory is that they changed the music because the music in Argos no Senshi blows.

I liked most of the music in Rygar better than Argos myself. Except for Drago's palace theme. The US version used one of the most repetitive tunes I've ever heard.

Too early to call, but seeing as to how the Streetwise team was promptly shitcanned right after it's release, that's one good sign of hope (and frighteningly enough, those guys actually DID have plans to redo BC on PS2 before getting the pink slip). But I say "too early to call" as I haven't played a single game by the Swedish development team that's working on this project; the two or three whole games in their portfolio aren't the kind of games I play to begin with.

So I was watching an interview with the producer, and something I couldn't help raising an eyebrow over was how the main character was going to be renamed "Nathan Spencer" because he felt "Rad Spencer" was too cornball and 80's. Now, I'm sad to remember this, but after beating both the original NES game... I seem to recall Bionic Commando's name only mentioned once, in the ending, and it was simply romanized as "Ladd" (could have been a first or last name). Was he renamed "Rad Spencer" in the B/W GB remake or something? I never played that one because I always assumed it was just a graphically reworked direct port.

Yeah he was called Rad in the gb game. It is very similar to the Nes game in the beginning, but the gb game gets very different about halfway through the game. Its definitely worth a try.

"Ladd" and "Rad" would be written the same in Japanese as the language doesn't distinguish between the two sounds. "Ladd" is still a shitty name though. And play Bionic Commando GB! It is a different game.

You know, I played the GB Bionic Commando hardcore for like a week, then returned it to Babbages for something else because I was going nuts with their stupid return policy, Because I Could. Still regret that.

The whole Rygar/Argos music thing always through me for a loop too. I love them both, but NES Rygar will always be my favorite. However, they were so obviously done by the same composer, so it always left me thinking "Wtf?"

A lot of people are complaining about the main characters dreads and "hot dogs" in his arms.

So, now I seem to've got a headache and the only remedy happens to be this.

(Seriously, the ending to the trailer... 5 million sold to compliment the holy prophecy of the 5 mil sales of the big brother!)
