|
|
Originally posted on underground-gamer was an anonymous release for K-Project, the beta version of Rez for the Dreamcast. The file is a self-booting image that will fit on a standard 80-Minute CD-R.
Here are the details from the .NFO file
Quote: | ==== K-Project ====
(Rez beta version)
Date: March 3, 2008
# of RARs: 7 x 20MB
Filename: kprjbeta
Some notable differences from the retail version:
- Debug menus appear in the beginning of the game; this can
sometimes disappear if this isn't your first time playing the disc.
- A mouse cursor appears during the beginning; a mouse can probably
be used to mess with the debug menus.
- Loading screen shows 'Project Eden'; the title screen says 'VIBES.'
- The menus are different from the retail release.
- Some of the sound effects have changed from the retail release.
- The music is mostly different from the retail release.
- The bosses act differently than in the retail release.
- The timing of the attack waves is less precise than the retail
version, and sometimes groups of enemies will appear and disappear
during transitional sections.
- The VMU displays a different animation than the retail version.
- The options on the main menu are different:
PLAY - Same as retail
EXTRA - Play all areas one after the other, like BEYOND mode
in retail, sans options
REPLAY - Shows a replay of your last played game
DEMO - Similar to HOW TO PLAY in retail, but can select
tutorial or short demos from stages 1 to 4
- Sometimes a small debug window flashes at the top right of the screen.
- Some of the graphics in-game are different from the retail version.
- The end-of-level score screen looks different.
- You can continue right where you died, unlike in the retail version.
- There is a unique intro to each Boss in the Boss Rush area which is
not in the retail version. You shoot groups of enemies that
form the name of the boss to earn bonus points.
- There is no music during the Boss Rush.
- The third boss in the Boss Rush is different.
- The final boss is similar to the retail version, but you start in the
center and gradually pan out at each evolutionary stage. The
video footage between each stage is also different.
- There is no ending, but the Boss Rush is labelled as Area 6 and you
are scored separately from Area 5.
- There's a sinister 3D picture on the options scrren.
- VMU saving, just like the retail version, works fine and takes 9 blocks.

Here's the megaupload version:

And you can (apparently) get it at alt.binaries.dreamcast if you're into that sort of thing.
You can in fact use the Dreamcast mouse to mess around with some debug options - if you don't happen to have one of those you can just plug a controller into port 2 and mess around. To get rid of the debug menu, on controller 2 press B, scroll down to console, and press A. |

you have got to be fucking kidding me, this is awesome.
Apparently burning CDI files from linux is a giant pain in the ass. I'm trying some goofy shell script, but if that doesn't work i'm going to have to go find a windows PC... |

Does Alcohol support the format? I thought it was proprietary to DiscJuggler. |

I tried that, and the discs didn't burn right... I think that only works for certain images. |

That guide seems to be written for older versions of cdrecord; I had issues with similar instructions in Mac OS X. Try using -xa instead of -xa1. I believe the functions of those two commands were switched around at some point. |

This is freaking sweet. I got a burn working on my real dreamcast with alcohol 120%. I happen to own a keyboard so I can mess around with the in game console. I haven't actually figured any of the commands out yet though.
Edit:
Qindows keyboard commands:
~: console
Pg up: scroll console up
Pg down: scroll console down
alt+tab: switch tasks
F1: performance info
F2: memory viewer
F3:
F4: Game info
F5: Camera info
F6: Enable disable frame stabilizer
F7: Variable editor (click help for english. This is very fun to mess with since you can change all sorts of settings.)
F8:
F9:System Info
F10:
F11:
F12:Hide debug system
print screen: no idea.. switches between two different debug views in the upper left corner of the screen.
insert: memory overrun start stop
S2: Brings up a different debug menu system called Nindows. It works almost the same way qindows does.
Console:
Typing help and pressing enter will give you all the commands for either console.
Controller 2 / mouse:
A/B or right/left click: Brings up menus. Some windows pop up different menus if you right click on them.
L and R trigger: Will scroll some windows.
I think a hacker / programmer should really write a detailed faq for this. There's a ton of shit here that I don't understand. Plus some stuff is in Japanese too so translations would be nice. This is only meant as a quick start for anyone who wants to mess around with it.
Edit 2; It sure loves to crash. I think this was really meant to be played on a development unit. As I recall there's more ram in them. It would explain some problems it has when using the debug features.

Yeah, Alcohol can handle CDI images. I don't know if they paid a license or what but it works. |

Hammer the join page when you've got a few free minutes. Especially during the snoring hours of the day for Westerners. They cut loose hit and runners and selflish kiddies all the time. |

This thing's great. The debug features aside, there's some really interesting stuff going on with the music. The song used in the first three levels (haven't played further than that yet) is Underworld's Cowgirl, which is paired up in live and single releases with another song called Rez, which hey, looks like was the inspiration for the final name of the game. Never knew the song was actually in the game at some point in its development. Kind of neat.
Also the boss theme is Born Slippy .NUXX, another song by Underworld. Mizuguchi loves Underworld! |

IIRC, Underworld was originally supposed to have done the music for rez (obviously), but they couldn't come to an agreement.
Even some of the early Rez stuff still has underworld tracks. |

That certainly was nice of the author of the source article to credit Lost Levels. It sounds as if the beta is a Lost Levels release :/ |

I deem watermarking necessary:
"NOT RIPPED BY LOST LEVELS"
(Yes, 'rip.') |

It doesn't look like they're saying LL dumped it, but that the news broke here.
Which make sense. I traverse a fair bit of the web, and this is the first place i saw to announce the dump.
Maybe someday i'll get around to burning a copy of this and trying it out. I'm actually more interested to rip the binary apart in a debugger, but that's a long ways off.
And did anyone ever find a copy of that VHS with early k-project footage? It was shown at some event somewhere, i don't really remember all the details anymore... (or any of the details for that matter)

This is probably the only public website where the dump was announced. I tried to go to that site linked in the first post, and I need to register, so I would've never heard of this release without coming here in the first place.
That newspost should be amended to include the info on the first post of this thread, though. It's only fair. I left a message at Siliconera, here's hoping they listen to me. |
