Hey guys, I was looking through one of my old Nintendo Magazines and they had an E3 99 feature. In the N64 list there was a game called Super Mario Adventure.

Does anyone know anymore about it?

Never ever heard of it. Perhaps it was one of the various names Super Mario Sunshine got before the whole gameplay concept was finally unveiled.

I believe "Mario Dolphin" was another title for that project, as it's present in the disc image (or so I was told).

I'm also guessing it's Mario Sunshine, but Nintendo is also rumored to be making a 2D Mario game that's been in development for years. I think the rumors came from some sort of demo Nintendo has run at some trade shows, but then again I only know what I read about on the interweb.

I believe you're thinking of Mario 128, which was most certainly not 2D.

I don't think it was Mario 128, I seem to remember reading about some 2D tech demo. Then again, why someone would have a 2D "tech" demo running in today's age of 3D crap, I don't know.

I think somebody proved that the sounds in the background were taken from an IGN video or something, although I can't remember if the guy who posted the SMU footage admitted it as a hoax or not.

If you mean those Mario 128 movies, they're here. IGN has a few other pages with 128 info, but every page on that fucking site locks my browser up for 30-90 seconds when I try to load them. I really, really hate IGN.

Super Mario Adventure was the tentative title for Paper Mario.

Yep. That's indeed correct. It was meant to be a sequel Super Mario RPG as you may know. No cancelled game. Just a name change.

I believe that the only tentative title that was used over here (Spain) was Super Mario RPG 2, I can't remember any other. Are you completely sure of this?

It didn't even have a controllable main character.

That's why it's a "tech demo" and not a "playable demo".

On the "SMA was the working title for Paper Mario" thing - I'm pretty sure the Japanese working title (or maybe even sub-title) for PM was "Super Mario Monogatari", "Super Mario Story" (Adventure would work though). I'll double check my recent Famitsu localizations for info on Paper Mario 2 and see if the Japanese name is Super Mario Monogatari 2 or not.

Paper Mario in Japan is "Mario Story." Maybe that's what you're thinking of? Probably not.

Sort of receding back into the original topic, (and I heard this from, like, a fourth party so expect it to be BS in part at least) I heard that Mario 128 was going to go back and forth between 2D and 3D and that part of what Nintendo was straining over was some new controller that allows you to open doors in the game with your hand. While the former is fully believable, there could be some truth to the controller part as well. In the vein of the interesting but cumbersome idea (ie: Power Glove, Super Scope) it's not too hard to envision someone plugging a doorknob into their GCN controller port.
