I had seen an article a while back about a version of Phantasy Star 4 that had a nice, 1st-person dungeoun view similar to part 1. Supposedly, they canned the dungeoun crawl mode and went for the overhead view that is now found in the game because of memory limitations on the Genesis cart.

Does anyone have any more info on this and has that proto been dumped???

All I know is that it was scrapped. No, no prototypes have been dumped, and I kind of doubt that any review copies had the crawl intact.

There's a screenshot of one of the dungeons at phantasy-star.net here.

Looks like Phantasy Star IV by way of Shining in the Darkness. I'd play it.

I'd be all over that. So reminiscent of Phantasy Star 1.

I'm not suggesting that I'd prefer it wasn't changed, just that I'd like to play the prototypical version :P

I don't think you HEARD THE MAN. Phatasy Star IV is to remain AS IS. No prototypes are to be found. No early playable versions are to be documented. IS THIS UNDERSTOOD?

Those dungeon crawls were annoying as hell in Phantasy Star, thank god they ditched 'em.

I should add that they were also IMPRESSIVE in Phantasy Star, and worked well for the first game. However, I'm happy we're past that, and I'd rather the 3D dungeon crawls be put to rest.

Yes. Phantasy Star IV could have improved the dungeon-crawl formula with an auto-map feature, but the overhead perspective is still a much better choice.

I'm more interested in the retrospective artwork that was shown with early previews of Phantasy Star IV. While I'm not sure if these images were intended as part of the game's intro, I wish they had used them in the final version.

Still, my favorite piece of Phantasy Star IV trivia is the illustration of you-know-who and you-know-who's kid. Some hopeful fans take it to mean that Sega actually had a PSIV sequel in mind around 1995, though I, for one, doubt that. I just like the piece in the same way that I like the art for the original Lunar follow-up, where everyone's older and Alex is a mullet-sporting lumberjack.

I'd have to disagree. I recently played Wizardry on the PS2, and it proved to me that the 3D dungeoun crawler, in conjuction with a good mini-map, is far from outdated. Wizardry, BTW, was probably the only RPG that I liked on that particular console.

I think Sega could have pulled it off and made the Phantasy Star series much more popular if it wasn't for the Genesis cart limitations.

Unfortunately, we'll never be able to know...

And sorry if I pissed anyone off, if I curse at you, it means that I like you, and that I'm not gay... ;)

Possibly old news by now, but

Sorry, but it's not happening.

So, we're going to get the Sega Ages Phantasy Star 1, but apparently SCEA wouldn't allow that alone, so now we also get a PS2 PS2 :D and PS4.

Heh, that isn't what the Smeared one was referring to.

Hey, they cut out PS3? Excellent.

Figures since that probably would've benefitted the most from a remake. :P

I knew that, but at the moment I wrote it, I felt I just HAD to throw that in. Sorry.

Good to see that the Phantasy Star remake is coming overseas after all, I was getting worried.

I never really got why people hated PS3 so much. Sure, it gets redundant sometimes, but so did most other RPGs. PS3 actually had some really cool ideas, like playing through with generations of characters, that age and have children, and can choose different spouses, which affects the story and playable character pool. My only big complaint is the map system. The world map is inexplicably tiny and obtuse.
