So someone actually read my SMS Power post...

Anyway, I just looked at the Kawasaki ROM again and found the Road Rash 2 credits:

Code:
8ROAD RASH 2 (TM)
9A CONVERSION  BY
P9TEQUE LONDON LTD
9PROGRAMMING BY
9ALISTAIR  MANN
:GFX    SHAUN MCCLURE
L:GFX              FAD
:SFX     STEVE MORGAN
:PRODUCER   TONY LOVE
L; COPYRIGHT  1991,94
;  ELECTRONIC  ARTS
;    LICENSED  TO
<    TIME  WARNER
L<    INTERACTIVE
<  MANUFACTURED FOR
<      PLAY  ON
= THE SEGA GAME GEAR

The credits for Kawasaki appear after the demo, so that's probably where these would have shown up in Road Rash 2. The only people that worked on both games are "Fad" and producer Tony Love.

And I guess these are the names of the other bikers/drivers in RR2 (again, from the ROM):

Code:
judge}
grips}
sinner
al}}}}
narked
tubs}}
ace}}}
geezer
thisbe
slug}}
tosh}}
rat}}}
smiley
viper}

The HEX code is pretty conclusive, but I'm not so convinced by the screenshot analysis. The hud being in exactly the same place is a valid clue. The horizon is exactly half way up the non-hud bit of the screen for both - which you would expect in this kind of engine. Also, the roads don't look exactly the same width to me?

They do on the grassy shot. For the desert shot, note that the scanned magazine image is missing some of its left side (compare the HUD to the grass shot to see how much). The horizon line is also higher, but in Kawasaki it goes up when you're driving uphill, which might explain that.

That account is just taking stuff from the Archive.org collection of previews, here's Road Rash 2:

I keep meaning to go through all of these and link to the unreleased stuff, maybe I should make a new thread and have us all brute-force our way through the videos.

Very interesting to see how they just changed a few things and turned it into a Kawasaki game. It's funny how they still left "Road Rash 2" in the code somewhere.

Hi, I'm Shaun McClure, and I did the artwork on Road Rash 2.

I can confirm that its the same road engine in both - shared code.

I don't get the fuss though. Don't you think its common practice, even today, to store code routines and reuse them? If Teque had written one racing game, it stands to reason that they'd try and optimise their time to make more using the same or similar road drawing routines? Smile

Nice memories anyway. I got all nostalgic.

Hi, Shaun. Thanks for the info. Don't be surprised that some of us get all excited about shared code and stuff -- this site is/was all about things that go on behind the scenes, art that met the chopping block, etc.

If you have any leftover artwork from those days -- even in ILBM format :) -- you're welcome to share it here.
