Yeah, I'll have to say that Zelda II was definately in the underrated category. I played it before I played Zelda I and constantly equated the gameplay of the first game to the map screen in the second game.

Wario's Woods.... The game that went down in history as the NES swan song. To most, it was yet-another Mario themed puzzle game, with cutesy music and second-string characters, a lacking story, and had a horrible learning curve compared to Tetris and Dr.Mario, and was mostly assumed to be as bad as Yoshi and Yoshi's Cookie. Absolutely forgettable... unless you played just enough rounds to hit the sweet spot. After getting used to running up walls, kicking stuff, and midair pickups, this game kept me challenged just enough to consistently work up a panic. A good game that I would classify as "complexity management".

Okay then.

Wow, there is someone else that likes the N64 Castlevanias. They were good games, they had some collision detection/jumping problems, but good games none-the-less. Also Legacy of Darkness had a cool midi version of Vampire Killer, even only if was played for 30 seconds.

General Chaos for the Sega Genesis is a very much underated game. If anybody out there gets the chance, download a sega emulator and the rom as well. I've had many fridays wasted with friends playing this game... and when I say wasted... I mean by passing the time.

Suikoden, which was viciously overlooked for coming out at the same time as FF7.

And of course, Simon the Sorcerer which was right up there (not quite as good as) the Lucasarts adventure games.

...But man did the 3rd one have loading issues.

Do the Abe games count as underrated? They rarely seem to be mentioned, but I really rate them.

I've no idea what the third one is like(don't have an Xbox), but "Oddysee" and "Exodus" are a couple of brilliantly inventive old skool PS1 puzzle games, similar in gameplay to Prince Of Persia or Blackthorne, but better.

Broken Sword(PC/PS1): Great graphic adventure in the Lucasarts style - Really lush graphics and a truly awesome storyline involving clown-assassins and the Knights Templar. Released as "Circle Of Blood" in the US, I think.

Septerra Core(PC): Mostly unnoticed european RPG intended to rival FF7, but which ended up being much less ambitious due to lack of funding. Good atmosphere, storyline, characters etc.

I actually bought Septerra Core, but never finished it because the game wants me to install an ancient version of Quicktime to run. :|

I liked it though.

Beyond Good and Evil never got the attention it deserved!
Instead people put so much light on Prince of Persia - Sands of time (and even giving it a sequal!?)

But if we're gonna jump a little back in time, I must say that Castlevania 64 (both incarnations of it) was extremely underrated.
The game rocks solid!
The camera sure can be bitchy, but then again, it can be realy annoying in other titles too, like those damn "old school" levels in Mario Sunshine... no one complained about the camera freaking being your worst enemy there!

A hidden talent some of us have is the ability to think in 3D, very valuable when playing games in 3D, as the camera wont be your worst enemy anymore!

The voice acting in Beyond Good & Evil is mostly terrible, but it's a good game otherwise. I don't think it's as amazing as most make it out to be, but I enjoyed it quite a bit, and would recommend it to anyone.

Along similar lines, didn't the director of Fable publicly apologize for the publicity not matching up with the quality of the game?

He apologized for speaking of ideas he had VERY early in the development process that they couldn't implement in the game. Little shit like dynamically growing trees, nothing substantial. He made no apology for the quality of the game, nor should he.

Beyond Good & Evil was my favorite game of 2003... nothing else really came close besides Prince of Persia. And while PoP is deserving of its sequel, I really wish BG&E would get one as well.

As for an underrated game... Little Samson. Pure platforming fun. Though the Japanese game is better.

... what made the Japanese version of "Little Samson" better?

The fact that you need to understand japanese to read the text "follow me" and the title screen?

Or are the more changes?

Now, "Cocoroon" now that's an underrated NES/Famicom game!

It's like the prequal to Little Samson...
Gameplay/music is very similiar, but the graphics sucks (but it's the same style as LS)

And you can customize your own character (and upgrade them too) and dear lord... they sure can look retarded ^_^

(edit)
Personaly, I find PoP - SoT OVER-RATED!

IIRC, there are more levels, and a lot of altered graphics and such. Like, gorier enemies, backgrounds, etc.

I really need to play through them both again.

From the few levels of Lickle I played, it looked exactly the same. Slightly different intro and title screen, but aside from that, nothing.

Okay... time to pull out the only game that teaches people about the problems my little brother have!

ADHD!

Little Samson tells the story of a very disturbed kid that's got ADHD!

The changes came in the later levels.
