Video game magazines are heavy, ugly, and take up a lot of space. They also affect your sex life and could possibly cause cancer. For these reasons and many more, you should give, trade and/or sell your old video game magazines to me!

Also, in all seriousness, I use these as a "reference library" of sorts for the strange and wonderful research I do, so you will be putting your old garbage to good use and bettering mankind.

What I'm Looking For

My main focus right now is getting as much material from the 8 and 16-bit console eras as I can, so let's say...1987-1997, give or take. I'm also interested in material printed both before and after these years, and would certainly take them if you have them, but more than likely I will not buy them unless it's a deal I'd be stupid to pass up, especially if it's in one huge bulk.

You may notice a lack of computer game magazines in my Want List below. This does not necessarily mean I'm only interested in console mags, it just means that I'm primarily focused on them for the time being. I may be interested in your computer mags too.

Countries of Origin

I am currently focusing on material printed in the United States, mainly because I can only read English and most of the good UK-published stuff is already scanned online. That said, one of my secret hopes is that there is a crazy person in the U.S. who has imported every issue of Edge and wants to get rid of them. If you are that crazy person, please let me know! I'd also be interested in non-English console mags, particularly from the 8-bit era.

Flyers, One-Sheets, Press Releases, Books, Mailers, Catalogs, Etc.

In addition to magazines, I'm looking for any other printed material related to video games. Did you fill out those information cards in the backs of magazines and ask for more material from its advertisers? Did you attend old CES or E3 shows and fill your bags with paper? Did you run an arcade, or work for a game studio that got business publications sent to it? Did you work for a newspaper or magazine and keep things that were sent to you? How about old mailorder catalogs? FuncoLand price sheets? Weird little 'zines? Let me know, I'm probably interested!

Shipping Magazines Is Expensive And Also Dumb

Yes, I'm aware.

How To Contact Me

Either reply here, send me a private message, or just email me directly at fcifaldi@gmail.com.

Want List

Below is an incomplete list of magazines I am currently looking for. If it's not on here, that doesn't mean I don't want it! Even if I already have an issue, I may be interested in getting another copy either as an upgrade (many of mine are rough/missing pages/etc.) or as trade material.

For Trade/Sale

I've got quite a few "doubles" that are available, if you are also into this sort of thing. I'm mainly looking to trade for other mags, and am not terribly interested in selling these just yet, at least until I see if there is any trade interest. That said, if you absolutely have to have something, let me know and we can work something out.

It's out of your time range, but I scanned the November 1999 FuncoLand price list.

It just so happens that I once collected magazines for the same reason as you, and I decided this summer that I didn't need a lot of them. I have two boxes of magazines that I'm ready to ditch. Here's what's in them.

EGM
May 1992 –Super Double Dragon cover (hey!)

EGM2/ExpertGamer
Number 14 –Tekken 2 Cover
January 1997 -Lara Croft Cover
September 1997 –Final Fantasy VII Cover
July 1998 –Mortal Kombat 4 Cover

Entertainment Weekly
October 8, 1993 (has Baywatch on the cover and a hilariously outraged editorial about Mortal Kombat. I scanned it.)

Game Informer

JAPANESE MAGAZINES

Animage
July 2001 It's an Anime magazine with Inuyasha on the cover. It has a small game section.

Famitsu
July 24, 1999 -The fox mascot is riding a camel on the cover. I don't know what game that represents.
June 25, 1999 –Mario Golf 64 Cover
July 9, 1999 –Persona 2 Cover

Famitsu PS2
June 24, 2005 –Drakengard 2 Cover

PlayStation Magazine
July 26, 1996 –Samurai Shodown 3 Cover (drawn by Trigun creator Yasuhiro Nightow)
January 31, 1997 –Lupin III: The Castle of Cagliostro Cover (oddly, this was the big Final Fantasy VII issue)
August 8, 1997 –vaguely obscene Ghost in the Shell Cover (possibly drawn by Cowboy Bebop artist Toshihiro Kawamoto)
January 1, 1998 –Wings of Alnam Cover. The game itself is covered only in a half-page capsule review.

Dengeki PlayStation
June 11, 1999 –Spriggan Lunar Verse Cover
July 21, 1999 –Saga Frontier 2 Cover
October 14, 2005 –Disgaea 2 Cover

Saturn Fan
February 16, 2004 –Street Fighter Alpha (Zero) Cover

Sega Saturn Special ‘97
-A catalog of every Saturn game available in Japan at the end of 1996. Fairly interesting, even if there's nothing unreleased in it.

Various stuff from Japanese magazines:
-A mini-guidebook to PlayStation games, with Suikoden II on the cover
-A Final Fantasy XI pamphlet
-Some horse-racing game pamphlet

And these are just the magazines I was prepared to throw away if no one wanted them. I have eight more boxes of magazines in storage, and I'd let most of them go to someone who would scan them, preserve them, or at least use them for some actual purpose. I'll check those boxes for stuff you might want.

Right now, I'd give the above magazines to anyone willing to pay shipping on them. I've found it's most convenient to get a $10 flat rate box and stuff in as many magazines as possible. I can also try media mail, but my post office is strict about what they accept.

I really can't think of any magazines I'd want in trade, except for a Gamers' Republic from late 1998 or early 1999 that might have my name in it.

I have pretty much a complete set of Gamepro from 1996 to 2000, but it is at my parents' place. Shipping would likely be very expensive.

Also, many of those magazines are scanned by Retromags. Though perhaps you are going for the physical library. Hell, Retromags might be a good source for magazines, as they sell them after they are done scanning.

Some yes, not all by far. I had considered ditching anything that is already scanned online, but decided against it because having these weird holes in my list would be annoying. Also, the quality of online scans is not good enough for me when it comes to something otherwise irreplaceable, like a small screenshot of an unreleased game that would benefit from being scanned at a higher resolution.

Plus I'm having fun! I haven't had a hobby like this in a long time. And if I ever get bored with it, I can donate them all to a university or something.

Definitely interested in the above! The list below this is more an "if we can cram them in to the boxes" list of mags I would not mind having. Do you have any idea how many would fit? I've never even seen the flat rate box, I don't know what it holds.

Well, these are the ones I'd need from that:

February, 1996
March, 1996
March, 1998 and beyond

I don't know how often you go to your parents' place, but I'd be happy to take these from you.

I'll probably be going there for Christmas (I still have a lot of stuff there that I need to pick up). I'll have a look when I am there for what I have. I know that in addition to the Gamepro magazines, there are various others, in particular Nintendo Powers, some EGMs, a copy of Next Generation (the one with Mario and a "what's wrong with the N64" article on the cover), an Ultra Game Players with Gex 2 (I know this particular one has lots of unreleased 64DD information). All of those ones are from the same 1996-2000 period. I also have an old Nintendo strategy guide book, circa 1990.

Definitely interested in the above! The list below this is more an "if we can cram them in to the boxes" list of mags I would not mind having. Do you have any idea how many would fit? I've never even seen the flat rate box, I don't know what it holds.

I can just barely fit all of the magazines you want into two $10 flat-rate boxes. If you want, you can wait until I dig through my other boxes of magazines. I probably have some other issues from your list.

I also thought of one other magazine I'd want to trade for: this issue of Game Developer. I always meant to pick it up.

Frank, I've got a few of the older NPs and a few GPS/N issues, next time I'm over at Mom's I'll dig through my stack and see what I've got. They've been treated kind of rough, but nonetheless I'd like to see them to a good home (I fully expect one day Mom and Dad will just throw a bunch of my shit out, and I don't want them to be part of that shit). I'm a little hard up for money now, though, so if at all possible I'd like to sell them rather than trade or donate (if I weren't hard up for money I'd totally donate them tho).

I got lots of the magazines you want, but shipping them out of my country costs like 50 bucks, which is the reason why I haven't sold them all already.

Yeah, and the reason I don't have many British mags. I have a bunch of early Nintendo Magazine System issues and some recent(ish) Edge, but that's it.

I'll check to see if its 50 bucks per pound or per shipment. 'cause if its per shipment and you pay for it, I'll give them to you for free.

I have EGM, EGM2/Xpert Gamer, Game Players/Ultra Game Players, Game Pro, Game Fan, Nintendo Power, Next Generation.

Are you planning on scanning all of them or something?

No, I'm certainly not going to scan all of my magazines, but I will (and have, for years now) scan anything relevant to unreleased games as I come across it.

The main purpose here is to have a reference library I can refer to if I ever need it. Researching game history is both a hobby and a profession for me, and there is information in these magazines that will probably never be on the internet.

Ok, here's what I got (I was in a hurry so some of the older GP issues and a few NPs are listed by month instead of issue number).

NP:
Jul/Aug 88 (1), Jan/Feb 90, May/Jun 90, 20, 21, 29, 30, 31, 33, 34, 35, 37, 39, 40, 41, 42, 44, 46, 47, 48, 49, 51, 52, 53, 54, 55, 57, 58, 59, 60, 61, 62, 63, 65, 66, 67, 68, 69, 70, 71, 72, 73, 74, 76, 79, 80, 81, 82, 83, SGB (packin with peripheral), SMB2 Inside Out pts 1+2 (inserts, can't remember which issues), 4-player Strategy Guide

GP Strategy Guide to Nintendo Games:
Feb/Mar 90

GP:
Apr 94, May 94, Feb 95, Apr 95, 76 (Oct 95), 78 (Dec 95), 79 (Hol 95), 80 (Jan 96), 81 (Feb 96), 87 (Aug 96)

UGP:
91 (Dec 96), 94 (Feb 97), 95 (Mar 97)

Most of these are fully intact, with otherwise normal wear and tear, but my 1990 NPs are coverless, and one of my NPs is missing the front chunk of the mag up until the letters section, which I did not realize was the case. All of my GPs are in good shape with no coverless mags (although some of them sat underneath shit for a while so there is some slight curving, but not enough to really consider it material damage).

Let me know what you want and how much you can throw my way and I'll try to find the cheapest (but safest) way to get them sent to you.

I might have some more stashed away somewhere but I'm not sure, I know there's at least one mag I have owned that is not present here (it was an issue of GP that featured a letter I sent in regarding a previous letter that bashed what was then known as "Toh Shin Den" =P) and I'm sure I have it somewhere
