Spotlight: Squashed

Mr. Chris Covell, of NES demos and living in Japan fame (amongst other things), has delivered an introspective look at vegetables, video games, bad puns, and children in ninja costumes saving the world.

Did I mention the bad vegetable puns? Peas read the article, lettuce know what you think, and then see if you can beet the game. Enjoy the meal.

*stabs you with a spork*

Very interesting article. Although... I didn't really think of all the similarities when I attempted to play this game a year ago. And uh... *Shush you now. Patience.*?

I found another similarity, story-wise. Has anyone heard of the "Commander Keen" series of games (for PC)? More specifically, "Keen Dreams", where the brave Commander Keen (who is actually just a kid with a weird helmet) is sent to bed early for not eating his vegetables. Then he wakes up in a weird dream-land and has to go trough many levels with veggie-themes, to finally meet the horrifying Potato King!

Sounds familiar? Tought so...

EDIT: By the way, is there a ROM available for this prototype? There weren't any links for one in the article.

I was wondering that myself. The game looks rather fab! I'm all for some SMB3 clonage.

See, I'm not the only one that noticed it being missing!

Look out or you'll get censored too *mmph*

*Kitsune_ gets dragged to a nearby room and knocked out with cloroform. Three Feka goons exit the room.

Your digging up some history there with Keen. Over all I would have to say no, Keen wasn't inspired by this game or it's clones.
Commander Keen was Id software's original cash cow before it created Wolfenstein 3D.

I just checked. Red's right (of course). It's right above the screenshots. The link is smaller than the other text but if you scroll slowly you'll see it.

NYVOPLAV Power ups last a longer time.
PAVOPLAT Power ups exire right away.
OXVOZPVK Power ups never expire.
AEKOPKNY Get rid of lag going into title screen.

Was bored, any requests?

edit;
ram offset 95 contains the current level. Use fceu to keep it forced to a value, then exit the current level or reset to goto that level. level4 = crud, (5+ are fine), 0 = level 1, I havn't experiemnted much (at work). have fun.

OZVOGTSX Always have armor.

It's great to see this brought to the public's eyes and hands once and for all :) I didn't know Chris Covell was such a good writer. I'm really pleased with this one.

If only great games like this were released every month ;)

Running this joint does not give you the magical power to beat all games, Red.

Does anyone know if the difficulty changed from the Japanese version? I haven't tested out this version but the JP one was a bitch and a half at times.

Oh. Yes. How silly of me. Thanks for clearing up my obviously serious observation.

Well I know you can actually pause in Sqaushed. In the Japanese version, the game would only stay paused as long as you held the start button. As soon as you let it go, it unpaused, making the pause feature rather useless.
