This is getting a bit off-topic, but anyway...

great writeup. touching base on something you mentioned in the article, i remember a while back that on youtube there used to be some really crazy street fighter 2 fan made vids from japan, presumably from SF clubs that people made. real weird stuff like dip switch weirdness and crazy glitch maneuvering while still being competitive and keeping some semblance of gaming.

one of the vids i saw was ~20 minutes in legnth, certainly from nth generation vhs, from some weird fan group and really crazy. do you or anybody have any recollection of these kind of vids? i meant to download em at some point, and i guess at whatever point i went back into my favorites and the vids were deleted, certainly the titles for the vids were in japanese and i just happened to stumble upon em. ring any bells for anybody?

I have no idea what the exact vid you watched was, but I'll take a guess and say it was one of the TZW combo videos. TZW was a Japanese group of players (I think it started as one guy who became famous for the Guile combos, and then it expanded into more people... though I could be misremembering on that) that distributed their combo creations on VHS back in the day, copied from tape to tape with some eventually making their way to US players on the alt.games.sf2 newsgroup.

There are a few on youtube. You'll have to make do with playlists because they aren't uploaded as one long video:

http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL8A6907077AB58AFF

Also worth mentioning is the "Nagoyan" series, which was a collection of bugs, tricks, and general matchup strategies purely for the first Street Fighter II, The World Warrior. The amount of knowledge they had about the game for the time frame in which it came out is really quite impressive.

By the way, amazing job with VS. Super Mario Bros., BMF! Your work is always most impressive. I'm sure it will be appreciated many years into the future!

Also, BBH- I quite enjoyed your VS. Skate Kid Bros. review, and the Street Fighter history as well. Very interesting and informative!

Sara Parker's Pool Challenge... Really? That is the best easter egg you can do?

Just enter the Konami Code for the crazy thing.

It's been months and I never could correctly activate or notice anything from what (I think?) you were implying in this post, so I'll bite, what's the other half of the easter egg(s) beyond the Konami code?

But where? I've tried all three at once in various places, but I haven't noticed anything change...

Oh... That is what BMF meant by B A D (B, A, Down)!

I'll let you figure it out (Hint: it's also on the trainer screen).

UPDATE: Version 1.1 is now available!

Changes in this version:

- Modified NMI handler to fix intermittent one-scanline glitch on NTSC NES/Famicom consoles. This is caused by a bug in the RP2C02 PPU and does not seem to occur with RGB versions of the chip, like those used on Vs. and PlayChoice arcade boards. Discussion of the glitch can be found here: http://forums.nesdev.com/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=10104
- Changed initial dipswitch settings to match the factory defaults listed in the original operation manual. These defaults can be restored by pressing A + B + Select at the menu.
- Dipswitch settings are now saved in SRAM. The menu will check these values at startup and will restore the defaults if any of them are out of range (e.g. if SRAM gets corrupted).
- The timer speed setting now covers both available versions of the game (as described above), eliminating the need for two separate ROMs.
- Minor code fixes.
- Updated ??? and added ??? (mostly for testing purposes).

I tried to play with an Advantage, and it just didn't work for me. It's too mushy and unresponsive. I need the tactile feedback of a microswitch joystick (like the original cabinet had) to really play this game well.
