In case you guys haven't already seen this, Rare has released some footage of the precursor to Banjo-Kazooie in its N64 and SNES forms, and also of an early Banjo build that looks a bit more like a Crash Bandicoot game than a Mario 64 clone:

It looks amazing, but it really doesn't look like it got beyond the demo phase (the enemies don't really do anything).

Really shows why Rare took forever to finish their games, they obviously didn't have a design document before they started anything.

I'm also not sure if it would have been much fun to play, had they not improved the main character's attack mechanics prior to release... and each new attack or ability would have meant a lot of new graphics for the animations since they're so smooth and can't be mirrored for left/right.

I don't know about the ROM dump status for any of these, but it looks like they're using emulators in the video.
