Elusions: Final Fantasy IV / Seiken Densetsu

Mr. Chris Collette brings you this look at two "lost" Squaresoft games. And in case you're confused, this Final Fantasy IV isn't for the Super Famicom, and this Seiken Densetsu isn't for the Game Boy. Enjoy.

I'd just like to add that I wish to commemorate this story to Square Enix's upcoming release of Sword of Mana on December 1st. Even if it wasn't a 5-disk Famicom epic, what the game eventually became still remains a classic that I hold dear to my heart.

I hope you all like the article.

I figured you guys would get to this soon.

I had a feeling that the original FF4Fami article (Japanese, not the scanslation done by BugCatcher) MIGHT have been fake after seeing the article on Skrybe's page, but for completely different reasons; Namco and Enix making predictions seemed kind of off for the time being, and a lot of what Enix had said was rather stupid ("Chocobo and Big Chocobo", Mechs...come on).

Looks like I was only half-right, and even then for the wrong reasons...^^;;

The first SD Project, now THAT being a barely developed project was a shocker.

Regarding the last paragraph, I can't help but to keep hope small, but alive. The only thing I could think of that could REMOTELY have an unreleased english translation is FF Extreme, but I have a feeling, given the size of the company's US branch at the time being, it didn't get too far at all. =/

On an semi-related note, I got to play Sword of Mana today...let's just say it lives up to it's 16-bit brothers.

Well, when FF5 was eventually released on Playstation, it featured a translation by Ted Woolsey, who by then was long-gone from Squaresoft. So the translation to it was certainly completed back in the early/mid 1990s. There could be (and this is pure speculation of course) protos of FF5 SNES carts in english, although I cannot say how far the PC version of FF5 ever got. For all we know, it could have simply been a translated rom in a glorified emulator. It's been done before, after all.

That's a good point... Chrono Trigger from Chronicals was a ROM that could be ripped... hmmm.... lemmie experiment...

Are you certain that Woolsey was behind the translation used in the PlayStation release of FF5? I seem to recall some dialogue ("They're pirates, fer Chrissakes!") in the PlayStation edition that no translator from the SNES era would even attempt.

yeah, I was thing the FFV translation on Anthology seemed rather rushed and uncut compared to Woosley's SNES work.

I don't have my copy with me, so I was basing it on recollection. Anyone care to pop it in their PSX and run the intro credits?

The translator isn't actually credited in the intro (at least in my PAL copy), but the localisation credits in the manual are as follows:
Quote:
Localisation Team
Localisation Director: Kazuyoshi Tashiro
Programmer: Yoshinori Uenishi
Localisation Assistants: Mai Morofushi, Tomoko Sekii

It doesn't specifically mention a translator... anyone know if the end credits are any different?

I tried hax0ring the ISO, but all I did was crack the dictionary compression and make a full table file. No credits though. :( Maybe it's with the menu stuff, but eh.

Also, does this mean that Seiken Densetsu might possibly still be a Final Fantasy spinoff? :(

What would suggest that?

Not really, as the original SD was dropped entirely in favor of Final Fantasy. What later became Seiken Densetsu on Game Boy was just a project done by the junior staff.

If anything is possibly a spinoff of something else, Final Fantasy might possibly be the spinoff from Seiken Densetsu (the FDS one that got canned). What evidence, you ask? Nothing but the timeline.

If we're to go by Kaoru, then I doubt this to be the case. They sound like two competing projects for the then-struggling Square, and as SD wasn't "supported by the higher management" they dropped it to focus on FF.

anarchy99: what? Don't believe everything you hear Damien say. :)

It's interesting to note that, when it was first advertised, Seiken Densetsu for the Game Boy bore the subtitle of "Final Fantasy Gaiden*." If memory serves, "Gaiden" denotes some sort of "side story" or spin-off.

*Not to be confused with the Final Fantasy Gaiden invented by the Gaming Intelligence Agency as an April Fool's joke.

In the Japanese advertising? Sources?

Yep. In one of the Japanese SaGa 2 guides, there's an ad for Seiken Densetsu, with "Final Fantasy Gaiden" beneath the game's title. I have the guide, but it's at my parents' house. I'll see if I can get you a scan this weekend.

SD is also referred to as Final Fantasy Gaiden when it comes to the soundtrack, and some general information sites list the game by its full title.
