I remember way way long ago reading in Nintendo Power that they were translating it for a US release. I later heard that it had been cancelled, somewhere around 60% completion. At least there was a fan translation, so I got to play it (it was eh), but I love this behind-the-scenes project-disaster stuff (anybody seen Lost in La Mancha?).

So does anybody know more than I do about why it didn't work out?

They decided to release Secret of Evermore here instead.

Bad move, IMO.

It was eh? That game rocked. Not on the level of Chrono Trigger or Liberty or Death, but still.

It's interesting to hear the claim that the translation was underway was mentioned by Nintendo Power. I know Game Players made the claim it was in development back then too, but there are other sources that say work never even began.

At the time, I thought it was great... but as the years wore on, I really didn't think it lived up to SoM. Although, I will admit it does have great atmospheric sound throughout the entire game. That was one thing that amazed me even back then.

Having played SD3 liberally over the last couple years, I think it's a better game. *shrug*

Don't mind me anyway. My opinion always seems to be the different one.

I actually spent five consecutive days trying to beat the game (and did so, 'cause I had to rent it) and one of those days was spent at the marketplace going from one place to the next, getting the best equipment.

I WISH games nowadays would have that level of inventiveness. So rock on, Klarth, for liking this game, faults and all.

Evermore is pretty underrated. Personally I thought it was as good as both Seiken Densetsu games, just different.

Evermore is not a bad game, but it's not nearly as good as the SoM games.

It had a very interesting trading system, but the entire games feels like the developers ran out of time and just cramed things in at the end.

PS - SoE was one of the few games made by Squaresoft in the US.
I believe it was done buy the team that did Parasite Eve.

I thought Parasite Eve was Japanese produced, as both the novel and movie are...

Anyway, SquareUSA made two games for the Snes atleast, right?

Secret of Evermore and Final Fantasy Mystic Quest/Final Fantasy USA.

have they even made anything at all besides those two?

While the story/scenario are Japanese, the game was made at Squaresoft's now defunct LA studios. Go play the game and when you beat it, you'll find that most of the credits are in english. Weird I know...

But how did the Ted-man manage to get a translation credit for the game, then?

FF:MQ I believe was Japanese made for an American audience. Though I could be wrong. The problem was that most RPGers back then were of the hardcore variety and saw FF:MQ as a weak game.

It had a good sound track for it's time.

Mystic Quest was developed by Square USA, just like SoE.

SD3 was going by the working title of Secret of Mana 2. Apparently it was worked on for quite a while.

If you check the credits to FF Mystic Quest, you'll see a lot of Japanese developers mentioned.
