A.K.A, Donkey Kong Music Education.

Just one question -

Does anyone have ANY information about this game other
than the few screenshots that float around the web?
I mean, a cartridge must exist, right? And if so,
has it been dumped?

I'm seriously losing sleep at night thinking
about the one Donkey Kong game that was
never released........I need help. Razz

Sadly, I'm pretty sure those few screenshots are all we have. If anyone would know for sure, though, it's ArnoldRimmer83. That guy over there, with the bass-playing Donkey Kong avatar.

Heh. Nice to meet another guy who wants to play that game. I love Nintendo's early Famicom releases, even the crazy educational stuff. Unfortunately there isn't really a lot of info on that game right now. Those screenshots originated from an early Famicom brochure, and that's all that seems to be floating out there.

I assume a proto of the game exists somewhere. Since it was advertised on the brochure, I'm guessing some work was started. Its possible the screens are mock ups, but I can't really say for sure. Needless to say, there is no dump of this game currently, though I sure wish there was. Hopefully some info on it may turn up in the future, though the proto is pretty old. (This was way back in 1983.)

That sucks. I also love all of Nintendo's early games,
and I was really hoping that someone somewhere
had found this one and dumped.

Well, anyway...

I took a close look at the screenshots for any clues that
might lead me to believe that they are mock-ups.

Not only are the overhead displays of Player 1 and 2 scores
consistsent with Nintendo's arcade-style Famicom games
of that time, I also counted the colors in the screenshot
in the "Music Quiz" screenshots and the "Donkey Band"
screenshots to see if they are within NES standards.
Sure enough, the picture depicting Music Quiz had nine
colors, while Donkey Band had six colors in it, both keeping
within the 12-color limit of the NES. Often in mock-ups,
the artist is more concerned in depicting the gameplay
as it would appear to a casual observer than anything,
and won't bother with little details like hardware limitations.
After all, if the artist can be bothered to draw a technically-accurate
screenshot pixel-by-pixel, then there's your screenshot of the game
itself right there.

Then there's the fact that the early Famicom games took something like
2 months each, if that, to produce, and I believe there IS a cartridge out
there somewhere...

Buried. Out that desert in the middle of nowhere. Right next to
Return of Donkey Kong, Kid Icarus 3, Mother 3, the original Wind Waker 2, and every other idea Nintendo's ever scrapped. Sad Sigh.

Thanks for the info, though! Smile

Ongaku Asobi was supposed to be part of a series of educational titles Nintendo planned based on their initial Famicom lineup, Sansuu Asobi (aka Donkey Kong Jr. Math) and Eigo Asobi (a Popeye game). Of the two, only DK Jr. Math was released outside Japan and since the Popeye game was about teaching Japanese children how to speak English, then naturallly there wasn't really much of a market for it in America.

But Popeye's game was translated by KingMike.

... Right.

SlyphGlitch: I wish I wasn't too lazy to go digging for it on IGNCube righht now,
but basically, Aonuma had said at one point that the next Zelda game would feature the same cast of characters, and an older version of Link, drawn in the same style. This keeps in line with what Miyamoto actually said in a major press conference, that Nintendo would be using this new art style for the next couple of Zelda games.

Now look what we have:
Ocarina of Time Rehash.
Oh boy.

<bitter sarcasm>
"IT IS TEH MATuRE ZLED0RZ TAHT FANS HAVE WANTED FOR YEARS SINCE TEH FIRST F0UR GOT RELEESED!!!!!111AND BOY WERE THEY MEGA MATURZ0RZ!!!!1 THEY HAD TEH BLOD AND WERE NOR FOR TEH KIDS NO THEY MADE US FEEL GROWN UP BECOZ WE NEED THAT SROT OF AFIRMASHION FROM TEH GAMES WE PLAY!!!11"

-- Nintendo Power, IGN, Idiots who wouldn't be satisfied with a
good game if it ran over them with an eighteen-wheeler, etc., etc....

If you really watch the trailers, it plays exactly like Wind Waker. I'd say all they did was change the graphics style.

And, you know, it's for the better. Wind Waker's art style was amazing for a game told from a child's perspective. Link's grown up now, the world just doesn't look like that anymore.

And I still love the speculations of some people when the first cellshaded Wind Waker images appeared...

Having a cell-shaded/cartoonish world when link was a kid and having an alternate grown-up/dark world with a realistic graphics engine.

Would seriously kick ass...
Especialy if no one revealed the darned dark world 'til after they'd come that far in the game XD
(unfortunatly, pulling off something like that today, without anyone spoiling it... impossible)

Well Kojima did a pretty good job keeping Raiden a secret in Metal Gear Solid 2. Course we all know the fan's reaction to that surprise.

I didn't mind the surprise as much as his whiny fucking girlfriend, but I eventually came to appreciate the humor in it.

General Raikov in MGS3 looks almost exactly like Raiden. I guess kojima decided that his decision in part 2 wasnt exactly a good choice. I actually didnt mind raiden but I would rather had been snake. The idea that liquid snake is an arm attached to occelot bothered me more.

Who says the Link in the upcoming game is even the same as the one in Wind Waker? My understanding of the Zelda games is that each extension of the series brings with it a new Link... kind of like the Mega Man games which feature multiple, similar heroes.

I can see your point, but..

..it's just that, after beating Ganon (*SPOILER* - You thrust
the Master Sword INTO HIS SKULL!) and seeing the end of the game,
why appetite was really whet for a direct sequel to Wind Waker.
You may be right about Link being "grown up" (actually, let me just
say this since nobody seems to read the interviews these days,
he's actually sixteen -- the same age as in Zelda 2). But I doubt this is the same Link, or the same world, at all. Take, for instance, the expansive fields show in the trailer.

There are no expansive fields in Wind Waker. Sad
Your main mode of travel is by boat.

And none of this would bother me so much if Eiji Aonuma didn't screw
with people's heads by saying that there would be a sequel to Wind Waker.
I'm sorry, but last time I checked, a sequel was a sequel. Ohhhh, but he meant
that in the general sense that there WOULD be another Zelda game for Gamecube! Well duh, of course there would be.

Even if the new Zelda game is fantastic, the ending of WInd Waker screams for a sequel, just like Ocarina of Time's did, and it got two---count 'em--- two sequels. *Sigh*. But I can just whine about it, or I can start a petition and get other people to whine about it with me.

And I think I just might.

Exactly. Except for the case of Majora's Mask, which was starring
Ocarina of Time's Link (anyone willing to debate that fact should
read the game's manual). Not giving Wind Waker a sequel is leaving
many die-hard fans of that game out in the cold. I know a Zelda game
is a Zelda game, and it's all fun. But Wind Waker was something special..
...hell, even the gameplay was a fun departure from the norm, but what's
the big drawing point that the new one brings? Slashing enemies on horseback. GREAT! Very Happy Now I can use my SWORD instead of my bow, hookshot, or my boomerage to attack enemies from on the back of my horse!

Majora's Mask and WInd Waker both added very exciting and revolutionary features to the Zelda series.......but the main selling point that Nintendo seems to be using is "Ooh, look, he's an adult now---be happy!". Well I'm not happy about the game until I hear that Link can jump at will, or fly on a dragon, or something else that would make it this *not* Ocarina of Time Rehash.

Where can I see these trailers? All I know of is the one pretty one with like 12 seconds of footage.

The thing that made the WW so controversial was the fact
that realistic Zelda was shown at SpaceWorld 2000. When it
switched styles, a lot of people were pissed. To announce
a realistic Zelda and then go back to Celda would be
suicide on Nintendo's part.

But as Blues stated earlier, Ganon gets it at the
end of WW. A true sequel to WW could be a nice
way to restart the series.
