From Eternal Champions Special #1, put out by Fleetway, the company that had the rights to european comics of Sega characters.

They had plans for a 32 meg upgrade called Eternal +, what sounds like a brawler for Game Gear, and two solo titles for Larcen and Shadow. The Sega CD version was intended to be in 3D, which I'm guessing wasn't feasible (maybe it was going to use the 32x?). They mention the Saturn title which we already knew was stillborn fairly early.

Sounds like there might be a few interviews in this. Enjoy the info!

I'd rather see that dwarf beating game. Also I like how he claims to "try to avoid" the comparison to Street Fighter II, after spending a whole interview doing just that.

It always breaks my heart to read things like this from people who are so enthusiastic and proud of the terrible games they created. I'm sure somewhere out there is a guy that worked on Bubsy 3D who will never understand why everyone else doesn't think it's one of the best games ever made.

Both the Eternal Champion character spinoff games were released as Chicago Syndicate for the Game Gear and X-Perts for the Genesis. X-Perts is horrible 3D-rendered shit, and an Eternal Champions game using the same graphic style would have been the worst thing ever.

Well to be fair, there are apparently a lot of Genesis fans out there that do like Eternal Champions. At least there are far more fans of that than Bubsy 3D will ever get. I guess the game did have some interesting ideas, but it was too damn frustrating.

X Perts was just plain one of the worst Genesis games ever made. I don't think even EC fans like it.

Not that anyone ever reads my stuff on Gamasutra, but I interviewed the designer of Bubsy 3D already. He said they let out a collective "oh FUCK" when, in the middle of putting the game together, they played Super Mario 64 for the first time.

Now wonder this game sucked so hard. And they tried to design it for all skill levels? They really did not know the first thing about fighting games when they tried to accomplish this.

Thanks for sharing that! I was curious as to how that project went.

I liked EC as a kid... Never could beat it (Didn't know how to do certain moves.... I know now, though )

The characters are about the only thing I really like, Xavier was pretty cool IMO....

Didn't the Sega CD version have extra characters or something? I've only seen ads for it... Never found a copy of it

The SEGA CD game Eternal Champions: Challenge from the Dark Side had lots of extra characters. The game was pretty good since it focused less on Activator compatibility and fixed a lot of issues with the original. Also the game had fatalities that could actually be peformed during the fight. A shame this game never made it to arcades.

Overkills are in the Genesis version too. They're fucking impossible to pull off though.

I rented the game when it came out and eventually pulled off seven of the nine overkills that weekend. What I meant was that they're impossible to perform intentionally, making them pretty much worthless.

Do the stage fatalities actually affect gameplay? Or are they just a gimmick like in the MK series?

Some of them can be performed without fully draining your opponent's health first, if that's what you're getting at.

Speaking of Eternal Champions, has anyone actually verified that the CD version uses up to 256 colors on-screen at once, and if so, exactly how it's done? It's often claimed that the Sega CD can use some sort of "HAM" mode, but that is incorrect, as HAM only exists on the Amiga and is wholly unsuitable for most games.

I'd imagine that the extra color depth was done with raster effects along with prudent use of the Genesis' shadow/highlight mode, but I don't know for sure.

Yes that is exactly what I was asking.

Sounds about right. I've never heard of/seen any other method, myself.

Puggsy uses a crapload of raster effects (enough to break KEGA Fusion!) to pull off some neat tricks during the credits. They almost fit all 512 colors onscreen at one point (423 in this shot):
