Hi, folks. I came across some juicy pics of the ORIGINAL Batman game on the PC-Engine before it was scrapped and the okayish maze game version was put out instead.

Enjoy: http://disgruntleddesigner.com/chrisc/secrets10.html

I second that. That looks like a very interesting proto, even if its an early build with possibly no enemies. Batman's sprite looks pretty cool in that version.

Man somebody make a watermarking joke here. There's no way this game could have not been better than the one that was released.

More proof that Sunsoft/Sun Corp liked to deny the world nice things...

Of course, now I'm developing a hypothesis that the Batman game that came to be for PCE might have been one of those games that just "gained" a licence... if only for the fact that it's nothing like the way a Batman game should play.

It most certainly did. Batman on the PCE, although not a bad game, was already done with Cratermaze/Doraemon on the same system. Pick up numbered items, kill/avoid enemies, reach the exit. Very familiar stuff.

The big "WHOOOSH!" on the magazine scan makes me want it more. Because that's the noise Batman makes.

Oddly enough, this game reminds me of the Batman game released for the NES. I guess it would make sense since they were done by the same company.

Good find...
