A discussion recently came up with some friends about monetary investments and "building for the future" and the like. One of the ideas that got thrown around was a museum geared around gaming systems and the accessories, cartridges or discs, promotional material, etc. that are associated with the particular systems. So I'm posing the question to you people here: "Would you be interested in visiting a video gaming museum?" |

Interesting that you should bring this up. There used to be a video game museum in Saint Louis, MO (on Laclede's Landing for those who know the area.) It was called the National Coin-Op and Video Game Museum. Basically, it was an arcade with a bunch of old games, but the guy had signs on them that explained the history behind them, the stories of their creation, etc. You could go in there free of charge, and play game until you ran out of quarters.
He had some "traditional" style exhibits too, like a room with classic video game advertisements, and a section devoted to pinball machine history, and so on. The main focus was video games though. It closed down a while ago; I think it's been at least 5 years but the place rocked when it was around.
Anyway, that's just my Interesting Historical Tidbit o' the Day. Enjoy.

You know, I think this poll's results may be a bit skewed, given like, what this place is and all.
Of course, I'm all for a video game musuem. I'd love to see obscure, phallic-shaped game controllers on display behind bullet-proof glass. |

Chances are I would never go to a specific video game museum unless it was closeby and the games could be played, etc. Something fun and local, not something worth making a trip out of.
A general computer-related museum is something I think I would enjoy more anyway. Give me old computer equipment from old manufacturers, weird hardware, oh, and video games too. That would make me happier. |

I agree here, especially since some computers were very popular as gaming machines, such as the Amiga. |

my idea was something along the lines of a more permanent Videotopia, with its own dedicated building and location, and whatnot. |

A video game museum sounds like a bad idea to me. |

A museum of certain game companies would be the kind that I visit, instead of console specific. |

"tough guy"? I wouldn't say that... But, anyway, there are already a few books and a few hundred websites devoted to video games. A museum would be redundant. |

Sure, I can read all about paintings and sculptures and shit, not to mention see pictures, but it really does not compare to seeing the real thing at a museum downtown.

What kap said. My concern about a video game museum would be whether it makes any money. Sure, video game geeks are a dime a dozen, but when the world is filled with 4.4 billion other people who don't give two turds about video games, I dunno exactly how such a creation could float.
But I might underestimate the devotion of a Power Player. It could be our very own Mecca. |
