I remember that the site mentioned that it was a licensed FF1 comic that never got released.
I'm aware of doujinishi (not sure of the proper spelling), but I don't think this is. |

That's far too poor quality to be a professional product. Kid's got potential though. |

That's definitely doujinshi... Real manga would be a bit more refined and touched up.
From the style, that might not even a doujinshi from Japan. |

I'm not convinced that it's doujinshi, the site did say it is a prototype, it could be an early sample made before real work goes into it. |

I agree with everyone else. I've seen pre-production work from professional artists and this just seems a bit too amateurish. We could all be wrong though. |

Wow, you honestly believe a professional did that page? |

The only thing that pops into my mind is how the original pre-production instruction manuals looked when I worked at Majesco Sales. As a beta tester I was shown the instruction booklets of the games they were working on and the original drafts looked they were done by an amateur using paintshop. But once we gave our suggestions, they fixed them up, added and removed stuff, they resembled the early work but at a much more profession quality.
So yeah, this looks very un-professional, but I still believe that it could be a real prototype. |

You're talking about something completely different. Instruction manuals are one thing, manga through a Japanese company is another. I've seen prototype pro-manga, and even that looks more refined than what that scan. =/ Sorry, I'm not convinced. |

I *JUST* (by just I mean yesterday before my internet was working) realized that Mike Mignola, the guy who did the covers, is the genius behind Hellboy and the BPRD.
I wonder if he has anything to offer on it.... |

I still don't understand how those two scans could be related, one looks more like an old 70-90's comic and the other has completely different artwork...
(sorry for bumping but I MUST know) |

Man did you just use "old" and "90s" as synonyms? Go to hell. |

Wow. That's definitely worth a bump.
It's neat to see how the American comic (or "amekomi" if you're a Wikipedia entry) used Amano's designs. The white faces don't work too well, but some of the costumes turned out nicely. Seems like they didn't bother sticking to Rosa's original art and just made her Psylocke from the X-Men. |

Looks like they decided to further localize all the names, too. Cedric? Corin? They don't even match the kana printed on the page.
I'd be curious to know what the rest of the text says. |

I'm actually surprised it looks as good as it does. I was expecting something along the lines of Nintendo Power's artwork when they covered the game way back when (look it up if you don't know what I'm talking about, they're hideous.) This is actually really cool, and it comes as a shock that they were basing SOME of the designs off Amano's work. I would have been all over this as a kid. Yes, definitely worth the threadcromancy. |

Did you seriously just disrespect Katsuya Terada's art? |

Terada is a talented (and often filthy) artist, but I will argue that his Rydia is a pudgy disgrace and his Palom and Porom are deliberately freakish.

The rest of the characters look just fine, even if they don't resemble the sprites or Amano's art all that much. |

Tellah looks more like he should be Fusoya. But yeah, the cherub-esque twins, and the weird post-apoc Rydia turned me off. The rest of the characters look fine.
I haven't seen Terada's work aside from this, so I'm not about to say he's a bad artist. |
