Have you ever wondered why certain games from Japan aren't translated and brought to the rest of the world for sale? Or how only some parts of popular game series are translated while the rest of the series remains a mystery to the general gaming public?
More specifically, have you ever wondered why Squaresoft didn't bring more games from the Final Fantasy series to the rest of the world? Read on, and find the answer to your questions in this month's Spotlight feature: Final Fantasy II. For the NES.
Oh, and Happy Holidays from the Lost Levels crew. |

Finally, I've waited YEARS to see this prototype. I want to thank Lost Levels (and the man who got his hands on the cartridge) for this release. If I could shake your hands, I would.
As for the bad translation, gotta love it. :) |

I gotta admit, when you mentioned you'd heard about it in another post a few weeks back, I was sort of taken aback. I didn't realize there had been some press coverage of it back in the day. But that's pretty cool, it meant you'd have a nice surprise with this new article. :)
BTW did you ever get around to getting those FF7 pics you said you had? |

Um, is it okay for you to be posting the ROM on this site? I don't know if Caro gave you the ROM or not, but as far as I know, unreleased material is often still the property of the copyright holder (Square Enix, in this case).
I doubt anyone would care. After all, the Earthbound ROM never bothered Nintendo, and as a fan, I love these things, but other companies might possibly be nasty about leaked material being posted.
If I'm being overly presumptuous or cautious, I apologize ahead of time. As a huge fan of your site, I'm just trying to help. |

If you can't release the rom, can you at least make an ips patch off the original japanese rom?
-edit- Nevermind, found it |

Quote: | The translation community has had these games for years. Why it makes "such a story now" lands a question mark on me.. unless Square paid slashdot for advertising. |
Quote: | Anyone else notice the ROM linked to at the bottom. That can't be very legal even if the game was never officially released... |
Quote: | from the looks of it, the rom looks like the prototype version of the FFII that square was originally going to release but abandoned. which means (i donno but could) that some of the text is in Japanese or doesn't make sense in english. |
Is it just that merely mentioning the Final Fantasy name makes people automatically turn stupid and presumptuous, or what? I mean, Sunman at least managed to generate plenty of intelligent discussion before...oh wait. |

Its the typical slashdot thing I suppose to not read the story and then ask a question that the story answers and then get modded up as "interesting" even though they have no clue what they are talking about. |

I'm not entirely sure, but if a company cancels a game, they get some sort of tax break if they destroy all copies and data on the game. This is to make up for all the money spent and taxes paid on producing/translating a game which never turned a profit. Am I wrong?
If I'm right, then wouldn't that mean that Square has no copyright on the USA NES FFII? (Even though they still have the copyright on the Japanese version)
Also, I haven't forgotten about the FF7 pics. I have someone that's interested in translating the article, once he translates it, I will release them both together so people can read about it as they look at the pics. |

I'm liking the Square tagline:

Just one request... Could you post a hi-res scan of that Final Fantasy Legend 2 box art next to the FF2 box in that pamphlet? |

The whole thing looks like a series of stickers to me. |

The logo does seem fake, but the box doesn't seem fake to me. That looks more like an eye trick, a visual illusion. Not sure of how to say it in English.
But the logo does seem like a sticker. |

I would bet on the box being created either without a logo or something smaller/less obvious, so a sticker was produced and stuck on top. Makes sense on some level. |
