That's my opinion. A wiki where anyone can post info or screenshots of beta's and unreleased games. Theres too much disorganization, with such info being scattered across multiple websites.

Wiki's don't always work out so well....

Case in point: http://assemblergames.com/wiki/dogatemysnes/pmwiki.php?n=Site.AllRecentChanges

My favorite quote:
Please stop these annoying "ProgrammingAce sucking Assembler's bollocks"-types of messages please!

Lo, the many projects LostLevels has been too lazy and indecisive to get off the ground (or at least past half-finished).

Well Proggy, you may have a point, darls.
Under NEC PC Engine, some fella listed Space Fantasy Zone as unreleased, and has a link to a video of the game on Youtube.
Well, this is a screenshot I took in September of 2006, using Magice Engine.
It might have been of a beta dump or whatever.

wiki gets mistakes too, but that if it's used by people in the know also then those mistakes will likely be caught.

It's good to see that there is a wiki tho.

I always figured the problem with assembler's wiki (and many others like it) is that it seemed like he just installed it, made a post saying it was open, and left it at that. I don't care how much your audience loves you, they're not going to put any real effort into something like a wiki unless you get the ball rolling and set a good example. That's why our internal Lost Levels wiki never went public, we all realized that we didn't have time to make it worth a damn.

I see one problem with it. I don't see a log in. I like to keep track of my changes. And it allows others to catch people who post misinformation and let them know about it.

Plus it looks so bland, plain text and few pics. They shoulda just used wikis look.

http://www.datacrystal.org/wiki/Super_Mario_Bros.

Thats another wiki. Even tho it don't have a lot of information at least it looks decent. They should go for something like this.

It was indeed a beta dump.

That one sure has a lot of useful info, including all the known bad dumps and overdumps! :o

Well, if theres all this bad information/misinformation flying around out there, and someone opens up a wiki, where do you think the contributors are going to be getting their information? It would most likely end up being a consolidation of all the bad information, in one easy to use central location!

Yes, let's forsake all possible positives to focus on the negatives that would be birthed from failures on our own part.

I was working on an canceled games wiki for a while (as I indicated in this topic), but it never got farther than a basic list of all the cancelled games I'd heard of, mainly due the facts that

1) the software sucked, insofar as I couldn't get the wiki to allow for the creation of user accounts (I wanted them to be required before editing, because I am afeared of the internet), and

2) I was too lazy/have too short an attention span to find a superior wiki host and copy/paste what I had into that, and

3) I just suck in general lately.

Aside from the sucking part I think I may be mirroring what happened with the Lost Levels wikithing?

I still maintain/agree that this (an unreleased games wiki) is a good idea, and if I wasn't a [insert colorful phrase to describe a total slacker], I would definitely try and get some motivation going in the community.

(actually, I already have a wiki I'm trying to get motivated enough to ask people to make for me, and another wiki some else made that's well-taken care of but virtually dead and I never finish the pages I make on it)

Basically, what I'm trying to say is, humans are such frail creatures!

To be fair to DataCrystal, it actually does have a bit of genuinely interesting information* when everyone's not busy writing entries about crappy hacks.

*Genuine interest being relative, of course.

Hey, I'm all for it, and I'd gladly contribute the data and pictures I have to any database/wiki that wants it, and is serious about it. But my concern is a valid one. The chore would be fixing all the misinformation that people are citing from bad sources. The problem is finding the admins who have the time to watch over it.

Datacrystal does suffer from lazy staff. I am in the process of adding tons of info and things to the site tho, cause I see good potential in it. I've thus far added images/templates to most of the games, I will later add all the rom and ram maps that I can find, so it may yet become the hub for game data.

But on topic, Having a select few trying to make a all in one resourse for all things beta hasn't work out so far. Perhaps a community effort would get this done, if it's started by the right people. I think a lost levels wiki would of been good, especially if it had the features Dais mentioned. Login and such.

We haven't thrown out the idea entirely yet. Our private one is still functional, and it's built with management in mind (in fact, it's not a wiki at all, more like a database that allows user input, which we can manage and approve/deny on our end).

Why not make it open for editing by pre-approved people only?

Real time editing is part of the fun of wiki tho. Why not just have a review team comb over the site from time to time instead?

That's a valid issue that we're exploring, I think the solution we came up with was to constantly monitor any changes made via a simple list and, indeed, let people update on the fly.

As far as a "closed beta" or whatever, what it really comes down to is that I won't feel comfortable having a wiki/database until I know I have the dedication to be its main contributor. Right now, I recognize that I don't.
