|
|
So, I've been burning PS1 bootlegs downloaded from the site linked to in this thread. This is kind of a new thing to me, so I was disappointed to discover how badly the FMV skipped in several of the games. Is there any way around that, like maybe a specific kind of CD to use? |

speaking of PSX bootlegs, i always wondered if a bootleg copy of Saboteur would pop up one day
It was a cancelled game for PSX, which resembled Shadow Dancer and Tenchu |

Burn at the slowest speed your burner will allow, try different media, or try turning your PS1 on its side/upside down. Those are the most common solutions.
Flipping the PS1 usually works best in my experience, though. |

It would also help to get one of the PSOne models instead of one of the big older Playstations, also try an older burner, I use a very old 4x HP burner and burn at 2x |

I use cheap media, burn at the fastest speed I can with my shiny new burner and use my Playstation right-side-up. Weird huh! |

Someday i might actually remember to post how to build a suped up PS1 (improving EM shielding, stabilizing the motor, stabilizing the power rails, and replacing the op-amp). Until then, here's what I would do:
First off, make sure you're using decent burning software, Nero or Alcohol. The free crap that came with my laptop isn't worth the hard drive space it's stored on.
Burn slow. The slower the better.
Try different blanks. Not necessarily more expensive, but different. Don't fall for the "black" discs, if anything they the discs harder to read.
If it still doesn't work, and it's a big deal to you i can show you how to remaster the disc so that the data is physically in the middle (where the PS1 reads the best). |

Thanks for the suggestions, everyone. Flipping my PS1 over made a big difference, but I don't get why that works. I thought flipping the system was supposed to compensate for warping in the interior of the PS1, which should make every game skip. My retail games are fine, it's just the pirated ones that have a problem. |

Someone needs to find me a whole shipment of old 650mb/74min printable surface 1-4x dark blue dye Verbatim discs... Those are without doubt the most awesome CD-Rs, ever. |

I just dug up my old 1001-model PS1 myself, and realized that the thing actually still works when flipped upside down.
Few offhand questions, if anyone happens to know: if I've got a v2.3 Gameshark with apparent firmware flashability and sold every game but Final Fantasy 7 (never finished disc 3), is there anything worthwhile that I could do with the PlayStation and CD-Rs? Any Net Yaroze freeware floating around? And for that matter, is there any way to pull my memory card saves onto a computer via serial cable and GameShark without buying whatever obscure PCI card InterAct was selling? |

Nice. I'd been looking for some opinions on finding quality media. Thanks for the link. |

Wow, nice site.
While you're there, I'd like to recommend The Divide: Enemies Within. It's kinda rare, though fairly cheap when it comes up for auction.
Anyhoo... Think of it as a 3D homage to Super Metroid. I keep encouraging people to try it, since I never hear anyone talk about it, and normally most end up loving it. Seriously, Super Metroid in 3D, it's as awesome as it sounds. |
