Seems real. Based on what I can tell from the previous write ups of the private dump it matches up (POW Blocks not animated, Lamp instead of Potion, Intro Text, etc.)

I knew this day would come eventually... just didn't expect it to be like this.

Didn't the owner not want this released? Hmmm...

Even though it's fun to see stuff like this, it is kinda bad when this is the "story" of how it came out, though.

It's a bit of a trust killer, kinda.
As it can kinda make the most Gollum like collectors turn all "My precious!" and put an even bigger limit on things when it comes to how much they're willing to show and share with others.

Yeah, this is the best argument against dumping and preservation that I've seen so far. Leave it up to Sonic fans, I guess.

Oh well, at least our elite private hoarding group will always have Sonic Xtreme!

"Also check out the article on this proto, stolen from The Mushroom Kingdom until I can be bothered to rewrite it myself."

What the hell?

Odd as it may seem thats the thing that pissed me off the most.

I think it deserves a thumbs up for atleast being honest and stating that it's taken from somewhere else.

Not so much when you take into account they have done it in the past and didn't mention anything about where it was ripped from. Its only a recent development they are saying they stole the content, and even then its on a forum post/news post and not the article itself.

I guess the owner should be careful about who they give the rom to. Again, to agree with Carnivol, this was a very assholish thing to do.

I think it is kinda sleazy-ish for them to of done it. But I'm still for Rom dumping to preserve the game. I mean, hell, dump the rom and just don't give it out. Tweaker isn't exactly the most honorable guy, I don't know why they handed him a copy. Back in the Simon wai Sonic 2 beta forums he was blasting a collector who was asking for donations to aquire a beta, saying he needs to sell a beta he aquired previously thru donations to pay for the new one. I think about 10 people who didn't support Tweaker (admin at the time) got banned from the forums, myself included. So I blame tweaker for this.

Still, I'm gonna play the rom just the same.

Pretty sure that was the plan! The owner wasn't just shoving the thing in his closet and farting on it -- he recognized the need to have it preserved, so he got it dumped. Then as a bonus, he allowed all of the differences to be exhaustively documented with pictures and sound rips, so as to make the distribution of a rom entirely pointless.

In theory, he would've protected his investment while at the same time ensuring the safety of the data, but I guess this amazing precedent in game preservation that could've convinced other collectors to document their rare games is much less important than having an EXCLUSIVE RELEASE and two pages of replies on a Sonic the Hedgehog message board.

It's entirely possible that there was another copy of this ROM around (remember, there were supposedly two proto carts, if I recall right).

Likely? No. But possible.

What I like most are the music changes! ^_^

From TMK:

One of the neatest changes involves the music. The percussion track of the Starman music is close to the "scratchy" original SMB rendition rather than the "wood block" SMB2 rendition.

SMB Starman
Prototype SMB2 Starman
Final SMB2 Starman

The underground music has been completely changed. In the prototype, the music is similar to the SMB3 remix of the SMB underground music. However, the music then speeds up and more percussion is added. There wouldn't be a remix like this again until Super Mario RPG. The final version was a modified version of the original Doki Doki Panic underground music.

Doki Doki Panic Underground
Final SMB2 Underground
Prototype SMB2 Underground
SMB3 Underground
Prototype SMB2 Underground (pause screen)

I'm sure it was also worth it for the wonderful artwork of Mario in Birdo's mouth that I guess they're going to use for the Mushroom King... I mean for when they surely put up their own page documenting the changes. Yeah.

Well, I got a few facts wrong, but tweaker is behind it, he pretty much acknoledges it at the link. "But I don't regret one bit of what I did"<<Direct quote. So in the future gotta make sure not to give any betas to anyone with "ker" as the suffix for his name.
