Checking through my old EGM magazines (July 1992) I encountered their review for Mr. Gimmick.
The game HAD to come out in the USA if they reviewed it, didn't it?
The scores were 5, 8, 5, 4. |

Doesn't necessarily mean it came out.
I don't know about Gimmick! particularily, but I know there's been some games that were cancelled at the last second.
EGM rated Dream Probe for SNES, but I believe only the Japanese version (Psycho Dream) actually made it out.
Toxic Crusaders is another rated SNES game that I don't believe came out. |

Yeah, I just saw that SNES Toxic Crusaders in another EGM.
The difference is that Toxic Crusaders was previewed.
Mr. Gimmick was reviewed.
I mean, today that means the game is pretty much for sale.
I don't know if back then they were in the habit of reviewing unfinished games. |

Actually, I think Toxic Crusaders may have come out. I could be getting my wires crossed about what was on which system, but I think I've seen a copy of it at the used game retailer where I work. |

Cancelled games are not necessarily unfinished. |

Can you scan the review? I want to know why the last guy didn't think Mr. Gimmick was worth a 5 at least. |

I think you might be thinking about the NES version
I'm 100% sure that the SNES one did not come out. Unless what you saw is a proto.

Too late
I already stashed all the magazines and that one is on the bottom.
I'm always saying I'm going to scan every page of all of my old EGM mags but I never end up doing it. |

There were full color ads advertising the second Ranma 1/2 game, too, which never came out over to the US.
There were reviews for King of Fighters 94 Rebout for Xbox which also never came out in the US as well.
Didn't Genesis Toxic Crusaders come out, too? I remember playing it, and there's a section in the game where there's no gravity or something, and it purposely causes slowdown or something. |

It did come out in the US. Just that it was called Street Combat, and all the characters were turned into generic thugs. |

You've got that backwards. The first Ranma 1/2 game was put out, heavily modified, as Street Combat, then the second came out here as our first. Evan is talking about what would have been our second Ranma title, Japan's third. Confusing, eh? |

Ah, whoops!
Well then, the THIRD game had heavy advertising and still never came out here.
I also believe they got the official english voice cast to dub all the voices (instead of the generic people they used in the prior one.) Or at the very least, that was the rumor at the time. |

Yeah, I got my wires crossed after all. The SNES one definitely didn't come out.

EGM's general policy was (probably still is) that they don't review games unless they believe they are reviewing a finished copy.

I saw SushiX and Trickman at MGC over the weekend, they said the rule was 90% complete in order to be reviewed... at least before Ziff bought them out. |

yeah, true. He said he was the one who did it the longest. I didn't catch his real name, and it isn't posted on the MGC site. He gave a speech, and that topic came up in the Q&A. He's one of the guys who runs VGEvo.com, if that helps any...

I don't think EGM's policy of reviewing only released versions of games was implemented until the release of Resident Evil. The review copies that Capcom handed to magazines lacked the magic storebox that were included in the retailed version (instead, you could only retrieve items in the rooms where you stored them) and some of the item placement was different too. |
