Ah, the Lunar games. Perhaps theyíre now archaic, but the first and best two introduced many a sheltered American kid to the ways of Japanese RPGs, including that honored convention of setting a sequel hundreds of years after the first game. Lunar II did exactly that, and abandoned most of the original Lunarís characters in the process.

That wasnít always the plan. GameArtsí original ideas for Lunar II: Eternal Blue called for the main cast from Lunar: The Silver Star to return, older and perhaps as supporting characters. Thatís what some early concept illustrations from Softbankís Lunar I and II artbook show, anyway. Iíve never seen these online anywhere, so I decided to scan them and finally get some use out of the book.

Alex, the hero, was a kid with a harp and a fur hat in the first game. For the second, he became a lumberjack and grew one hell of a mullet, while his passive love interest, Luna, started wearing makeup.

Mia looks a lot like she did in the first game. Oh well.

Alexís fat, worthless friend Ramus, who stayed in the party for about five minutes in the first Lunar, got a monocle and cigar for Lunar II. From the look of it, Jessica didnít change much at all.

The book also has illustrations of Nash and Kyle, but they looked exactly like they did in the first game. You can see Kyle drunk and passed out in this storyboard shot. I donít know if itís a planned scene from Lunar II or an unused movie sequence from The Silver Star.

Finally, I scanned this. It could be a discarded idea for a mini-game, but that's...unlikely.

If anyoneís interested, I'll scan some of the production art featuring Lunar IIís actual characters. Lucia, the heroine, went through a bunch of redesigns, and thereís a drawing or two of the beast-people Leo and Mauri as centaurs. Oh, and Rubyís human form, which I donít believe we ever saw in the game.

Wow very interesting find. I wonder what made them decide to totally scrap the original characters and make a sequel set 100 years in the future.

I'd like to see that stuff. Concept art is always fun to look at.

The chick in the last pic laying down appears to have a labia hanging out the side of her suit. Don't blame me. I didn't draw it.

If you examine the position of her derriere, you'll see that's not really possible. Not that there's anything wrong with a little labia.

Oh, I see. Ever see one of those pics where if you look at it one way it's a duck, but if you look at it another way it's a frog or something?

Well anyway, if you look at it a certain way it seems like the front are her hips are facing the front, not laying on them. That's the perspective I saw, but now that you mention it, yeah, she is laying front down.

Coming from someone named Tongueman, it figures.

Because, umm, that means he speaks well. Yeah.
