I've just banned new accounts from signing up with gmail addresses in a weak attempt to slow down spambots, because I am too drunk to do research and stuff and try anything else, etc. If this causes other problems, well, I guess we'll soon find out right?

This was incredibly effective on my PHPbb board. We went from about 100 spammers a day to about 5 per year. I know it's older then dirt, but it's incredibly effective and simple to install.

You guys don't even have the default captcha turned on? |

Captcha, pff! :)
I actually had a (manually) rotating registration check as well as something else set up, but I've been busy and the terminators have been adapting. To be honest, we need to upgrade anyway.
I've also been thinking about editing the registration emails that get sent out, I'd love to know more about how spambot registration technically works, I presume the different kinds do mostly the same thing.
I also also am curious whether some sort of spambotbl or something exists, it would be nice to hook into and I was thinking about how easy it would be to implement something that would be useful (on a wide school of course/unfortunately), but, as ever, busy busy. |

Can you guys even upgrade to PHPBB3 from 2? A while back I looked into it for a friend and it seemed like you needed to do a fresh install. Maybe I'm wrong though. |

I think it is possible, but guess who doesn't feel like finding out? There was a board converter when 3 was still in beta, I would assume it still exists, but, yeah, see previous sentence. |

FYI, some dude emailed me because he wanted to sign up here and the board was rejecting his email (gmail, i assume).
I gave him frank's address. |

Someone emailed me two days ago, I think, I don't know if it's the same guy. |

Unban if you want/need, no real big concerns. I'll look into stuff this weekend when I have time. |

(Obviously) ill-advised ban of gmail.com removed, trying something else.. and trying to avoid the captcha still. :) |

The spambots were apparently waiting for you to do that. |
