I found a magazine ad in a November, 1985 issue of New York Magazine advertising the NES. The NES was test-marketed in New York around that time, and I believe this may be the first NES ad ever: (link)

Google Books is awesome and I want it to grow exponentially.

Everything in that primordial article rings true. Great find!

Fun stuff, never thought of using Google books for info.

Popular Science article on video game CD rom units (including the failed SNES CD)

Popular Mechanics article on the video game systems from the early 90s

Pretty cool guys. I have been browsing sites with vintage ads, mostly blogs, and I find it interesting to see how we in the west have evolved in our concept of popular culture. Cigarette ads in the 50's with babies telling their moms' to chill out and smoke would be heinous today.

I'll keep an eye for old game ads.

Someone on my IRC channel was saying that old National Geographic magazines are great sources for old video game ads.

Or educational/multimedia stuff from the early-mid 1990s.

You mean the ones with the entire family salivating over a pre- rendered image of a chunky blob representing the number 5? Yeah, you're right!
