|
|
This has been bugging me for years. I've asked on several forums about it and no one has been able to find anything. I don't know why it didn't think of asking here too.
Anyway. Does anyone remember seeing, before the SNES SSF2 came out, some beta pics of the SNES game that showed Cammy wearing black Lycra pants?
I remember it was an article about the game or maybe game development on EGM or Next Generation or GamePlayers and I distinctly remember an ingame picture of Cammy with lycra pants and somewhere in the article (or maybe the picture caption) said something like adding the Lycra pants to avoid Nintendo's censoring or something like that.
Does anyone here ever saw that pic or am I imagining it?

You aren't crazy or anything, I saw it in an old issue of Club Nintendo (Mexico) and I think I did see a scan of it once. |

Hmmm.... Club Nintendo, that could be the one. I have all the issues.
Let's see if I get the strength to dig in my closet for them. |

Nice! I think it also appears in a much later issue, probably one of the anniversary ones, or at least it tells you that the pic is there. |

The same pic or a different one?
Someone from another forum told me he remembers playing a SNES version of SSF2 with lycra cammy when he lived in Argentina.
I think his memory is playing with him, but could there actually be a latin american version of the game with lycra cammy?
Also, on the pic, it doesn't even say Cammy. It says "Gammy" |

Maybe he played a pirate cart? Its unlikely, but maybe the proto somehow got leaked out and some pirates just slapped that onto a cart. |

There's been plenty of Bootleg carts. Obviously, the Speedy Gonzales hack "Sonic the Hedgehog" would be a pretty notable example. Most of the other ones I've seen are subpar-quality "Hong Kong Originals" or such, like the, um, "Port" of Soul Blade.
The big question here would be why a Bootleg Super Street Fighter 2 would have a feature such as this. |

No, that says "Cammy". The first couple shots are on busy backgrounds and it looks a bit like a "G" but the third shot, it's pretty clear. Compare to "Chun Li" above. |

My SNES knowledge is crap, but didn't SSF2 use a unique chip? Wouldn't that be hard to bootleg? |

Alpha 2 was the one that used a special chip. |

Yet it still had load times. |

IIRC, the load times were because of the chip. The game data was extremely compressed, and the chip handled the decompression.
Far worse than the load times was the speed of the game. It ran at about 1/4 of the regular speed. |

Street Fighter Alpha 2 uses the SDD-1, which probably acts like how it's used in Star Ocean; handling the decompression of most/all graphics data for the game.
A guy I know has a pirate Super Street Fighter 2 - The New Challengers cartridge. It's the Japanese version, but it runs on a PAL SNES without any mumbo-jumbo required. Tried dumping it at one point, but unfortunately my old backup unit can't handle carts larger than 16mbits. Opening the cart also revealed people's favorite; the rom chip(s) being covered by nice black globs.
I might try to kidnap the cart again if I get a new setup one day, but I'd rather not talk to this guy (Still suspect him of intentionally accidentally taking of larger portions of my old carts-only SNES pile (and denying such taking)) |
