Definitely looks like an arcade shot. |

That looks kind of cool in a Hagane/Robocop/Strider way. Then again, this is the same Athena that made Strike Gunner STG and Castle of Dragon, right? Most of their stuff is bland. |

I thought Castle of Dragon was alright, and the music was killer. |

Yeah, I think the only big thing Athena made was the Dezaemon series.
Though I kinda liked De-Block for Famicom (ring Tetris in space). |

Athena also made Daioh, the arcade shmup that for whatever reason has a 6-button layout a la SF2 (three shot buttons, three bomb buttons). Excessive but I thought it was a fun game. |

Yep.
I wonder if we will ever see some screenshot of the Hagane sequel for N64 .... |

This may have (much later) been revived to be turned into Light Fantasy Gaiden, a PSX RPG by the same developer that also features somewhat similar-looking catgirls. It may have just been a revisit of the (kind of generic) concept, though, since I remember that game had an overhead view map and slightly more dynamic-looking battles. |

There are cat-girls in those 2 screenshots ?
For sure lots of girls.
I'm not sure it is related to Light Fantasy because Light Fantasy 2 was released the same year ( 1995 ) also it has a different battle system/exploration system from what I can see in a couple of screens.
Are there some screenshots of Light Fantasy Gaiden online ? |

Not sure if this was common practice or not for this developer, but am I the only one to find it a bit curious that the battle shot is in English? (I suppose if it was in the localization pipeline of some company, the chances of there being build(s) floating around might not be too close to 0.)
(Googling "Light Fantasy Gaiden" gives me both pics and sprite rips, doesn't exactly look very similar. Not even close.)

You're right, not really sure where I was going with that.
True, it is kind of weird the battle shot is in English. English menus aren't that weird, but it's not too common for battles. |

Crawling all the way back to the opening posts!
I was skimming through piles of VHS tapes (since I have this odd fetish/hobby - which will hopefully bear fruit soon. Just had a few minor setbacks. Both expected and unexpected.)
Anyway, in the middle of it all, stumbled upon a tiny piece of footage of;
Legend of Hero Tonma (Famicom)
(which if I've understood this thread's links and google right is an unreleased game/port)
[edit]Seems like Chris' got the full version of the tape I ripped that from on his YouTube channel. Follow some links!. The Game-TV Aug. 1990 upload. Dunno if there's anything else of interest on it, but at least the last segments of it has a rather lengthy... something something about the SFC. Not sure what the deal is, but the not-entirely-final design of the SFC shown there is a nice curiosity, I guess.[/edit] |

Wasn't IREM forced to choose between releasing Tonma and Kickle Cubicle either for the NES or the TurboGrafx, for some odd reason?
Or was that just more internet bullshit? |

Don't know about Kickle Cubicle but if the NES/Famicom third party contract clause that stated the exclusivity were still valid then Irem had to choose between the 2 version. |

The 3rd party contract clause that limited development was only on the NES (not the Famicom). Who knows what Irem's strategy was, but yeah, they did withhold the release of Kickle Cubicle for the PC-Engine:

They advertised for it and everything. Weird, spazzy Irem. |

I like the look of Felicia, but then I always liked the big sprites that a lot of Super NES RPGs used toward the end of the system's life. Strange that Light Fantasy 2, which came out the same year as Felicia, looks a lot more primitive.
Cool, it's like Little Nemo. |
