Damn, the bots are getting smarter...
I'll play the Scott Pilgrim game, but that's as far as I go.
Takes more than references to my favorite NES games (and enemies) for me to get into a graphic novel series these days.

I've said so before and I'll say it again, Scott Pilgrim the comic is pretty fucking awesome. |

I'll get my wife to pick me up a copy of Volume 1 from the library where she works sometime then. I'm kind of running out of stuff to read at the moment. |

Dude, your wife works at a library and you're running out of stuff to read? What a santa hole.
So if a comic with video game references can be a graphic novel, is that redundant? If it is porny or bloody, does that make it a graphic graphic graphic novel?

"Graphic novel" is what people who are ashamed to read comic books call comic books. |

It's not as good as you think. This is one of those southern library systems that puts certain teen novels in the adult section, or outright bans anything with the slightest hint of homosexuality. I'm surprised they actually have a copy of Watchmen.
Still haven't been able to locate any of the Scott Pilgrim GNs.
Oh and the difference between graphic novel and comics is graphic novels are thicker and more "book like" while comics are thinner and only about 20-30 pages. Or what Smeg said. |

^ Hey, fuck the spammer, but what did everyone make of the movie version? Not having gotten around to reading the graphic no-er, comics, it's leading me to re-buy the first Frank Black album, and and humbled me to recognize that the Puck-Man/paku-paku spiel/pickup line was supposed to be remarkably nerdy, and I already knew all of it, and am just as apt on rare occasion to blather on about how Ms. Pac-Man was created not by Namco but by a couple of MIT kids, blah blah, unauthorized Midway sequels, legal battle, etc. etc.
I also had been playing Zelda 3 for a week before seeing it, so the recurring Link to the Past music motif was pretty cool to run into. |

I haven't read the comic, but I enjoyed the hell out of the movie. It's a real shame that it doesn't seem to be much of a hit. |

Just read the first two graphic novels, and no way in hell should Michael Cera be playing the role of Scott Pilgrim. I'm not paying to see it.
I wish he would just finish puberty, quit using the same spaced out look, and stick to chick flicks designed to look like comedies.
Oh, and as far as my view on the graphic novel goes... okay, but not great. Love that they made a shot at Jason Lee being a sellout (even if they didn't make fun of him being in a cult) but everything else is just video game/music nostalgia as the selling point. |

I had not previously realized that the character was supposed to be a Jason Lee analogue (makes sense), nor had I realized that Jason Lee is a Scientologist. I learned two things today! |

The Scott Pilgrim books are a mediocre webcomic that got lucky.
I enjoyed the movie, though. Sometimes too damn cute for its own good, but the characters were all a lot more appealing than they were in the comic. |

I am just sick of all the Pilgrim fans telling me it is my duty to support the books and movie if I am a TRUE GAMER. Fuck that.
It is shitty wanna-be manga made by some weeaboo douchebag from Toronto who makes references to old games because he can't write for himself.
The movie flopping led to some hilarious hand-wringing on lots of game forums. |

You sound bitter.
I went in without having already decided to love or hate it, and I thought it was a lot of fun.
What I'm really surprised no one's talking about is the excellent game. It does a great job of extending the River City Ransom formula, which is underused anyway. I was worried when I saw the first trailer because most "classic" beat'em ups are really boring, but I'm glad I was wrong. The art is by the Pirate Baby guy, which is perfect - I always thought his animations would play better as games, and the Scott Pilgrim game plays better than his movies looked.
Still haven't read the comic. Sounds like it's not really worth it though, Fenris? |

Yeah, I'd skip it. Lots of Scott Pilgrim fans will disagree and tell you about all of the things that the movie left out. I didn't miss them.
The comic actually gets somewhat interesting in the fifth volume, where the main character realizes he's been a worthless man-child for the past four volumes. Then it brushes all of that aside for the sixth volume, which is yet more video-gamey claptrap and poorly handled melodrama.
Then again, the last comics I bought were some crappy '90s superhero ones that a store was selling for 25 cents each.

Finished Volume 6, what a goddamn mess of a story... Makes me wish I didn't give up drawing, because I know I could write a better story than this guy.
What a waste of Clash At Demonhead references... |
