okay, giving it a second look, maybe they're not that similiar (especially since they keep changing slightly in design between each game)
But in overall, they're awesome! (as awesome as humanoid robots can get)
And Konami should've stuck to it, but I guess the costs and the lack of a business/economical 'reason' to do so, I guess we wont see that happen anymore.
But ofcourse, now, during these days of compilations, where's your Contra/Probotector pack Konami!? |

I remember back in 2003, when idiotic anti-French ugliness infested America (hell a lot of ugliness infests America), and I would not DARE play Koei's L'Empereur for fear of being attacked. |

Really? I thought everyones reason for not playing L'Empereur was because it was comparable to sucking the shit from a corpse.
But on a more serious note, isn't KOEI's purpose to wait for people to buy the game, then give them the middle finger with both hands because they suckered 'em again? |

All I'm saying is that Liberty or Death on the SNES rocks. |

Umm...no.
I enjoy KOEI games a lot, especially L'Empereur.
I'm not sure if you should be speaking for everyone else, but if you are into that necroassphagocitosis, I can't imagine what you think is gross. |

So I don't know if you've heard, but apparently some guy has gotten his hand on a prototype of Socks the Cat, and has put up a blurry video of it. |

Some guy pretty much has to be DreamTR, because he has this prototype. |

That video was interesting... but it's kind of worrying that it wasn't taken from an emulator, since it could mean that it hasn't been dumped yet. |

If you're looking for some more info about this game, I found out the developer was Realtime Associates, and the music was done by the folks at Team Fat. Source: http://www.fatman.com/faqs.htm |

They also did Maniac Mansion for the... SNES?
EDIT: Okay, must be a typo because they don't list the NES version. Oh well. |

Yeah I emailed George about that years ago, it's a typo.
EDIT: I once took him out to a bar in Vegas when he was there on business, and we ended up having an impromptu jam of "Razor's Theme" using our mouths for the guitar and the bar for percussion. One of my favorite game developer memories! |

I was always more of a "Syd's Theme" kind of guy, myself.
Incidentally, I remember reading rumors of a canceled SNES version of Day of the Tentacle (or at the time in the magazine, they just called it "Maniac Mansion 2"), but I only remember hearing it from early '90s GamePro, and I remember their rumors section usually being all over the place in reliability versus EGM's.
EDIT: Since I just saw that 5 years ago in this thread, people were debating the merits of KOEI games, I must opine: I don't understand how any Westerner who isn't a high-level scholar of Japanese or Chinese political history could ever enjoy playing a KOEI simulation. To anyone else, every screen is just a wall of menus of numbers and unfamiliar names. |

One of the Youtube uploader's comments says "It has been dumped for posterity on a computer so the data is saved. Thank you for your interest in keeping this safe." So at least there's that.

If you start with Romance of the Three Kingdoms and/or Destiny of an Emperor for NES, the names gradually become familiar (at least within the Three Kingdoms period). Still, I always pass by my copies of the Koei sims for Genesis and feel a pang of guilt.
That said, I might have a marathon session of one of the RTK games over the holidays with my family, though (probably RTK1 if we can get it to save via the Dreamcast NES emulator, or RTK2 if not). |

As Frank already knows, it looks like the cartridge for this game is up for offer from DreamTR now.

Wading through the typical posts that always come up within a topic with DreamTR( ), I wonder if anyone that he says has messaged him offers has the intent of trying to get it out there once they obtain the cart.
The fact he'll trade a Stadium Events box gives a good idea of how much he wants for it. |

I'm seriously thinking of going through the games that Kaneko USA made, and trying to contact some of the people who could have worked on the game to see if they have a copy in an archive. |

I did that myself before and contacted someone who was the former director of product development of Kemco. His name was Jeff Hill. He owns a company called DetN8games now. I think I actually talked to you about this before on IRC a couple years back =p
May as well share what he told me then, nothing exciting.
Quote: | Hi – thanks for your message.
Now that…was a long time ago! Socks the Cat pretty much headed straight for the litterbox. The game barely got off the drawing board and never got close to being a finished product. All we had at the time development was cancelled was part of its first level. Discontinuation of its development had nothing to do with censorship. The game had a long, long way to go and Kaneko closed its US office in July of ’94.
Nothing remains – of what little there was of it in the first place!
Best Regards,
Jeff |
Going by the sounds of DreamTR's copy, we at least know the game certainly wasn't as unfinished as he seems to remember. Here's a further message I got from him.
Quote: | The game was never submitted for approval either to NOA or Sega – and certainly never manufactured. I was the guy who would have submitted it! Ann Macdonald…hmm…the developer’s name might have been Brian Macdonald. My memory is a little fuzzy. I have a vague recollection that his wife was involved. Well, I know his name was Brian! He had a small shop in a suburb west of Chicago . I see where she’s quoted as saying that the game was complete and through Nintendo’s approval process. Not through me it wasn’t – and I was the last guy standing at Kaneko USA .
Honestly, the game was nowhere near complete – and development was stopped at least six months before Kaneko closed the US office. I was there to the bitter end – and about five months beyond (retained as a subcontractor to close up shop).
Since you wrote, I’ve been poking around and have read some of the stuff out there about the game. Someone says they have a copy and like the game! Someone else has a screenshot of the title screen. Amazing – because there was no game other than some early-development eproms (there were screenshots, though!).
Seems to me that some urban legends have developed around Socks. Who woulda thunk! |
I imagine there's other people out there that were involved with the game's development you can find still. Would be interesting to see the Genesis version come up too. |

If you look at the page for Socks The Cat on SNES Central, someone had contacted Ann McDonald, and she said she didn't have a copy of it. |
