For those not aware, a new unreleased arcade game from Konami has been preserved: http://mamedev.emulab.it/haze/2016/06/06/divebombersquad/
It looks pretty dated by 89's standards, so that may be the reason why it was canned.
EDIT: Fixed post.

There was a Konami arcade? Did Konami offer someone a special deal on Konami games or something? Can't figure out why else there would be a whole arcade dedicated to Konami. |

Arcade game of course, but Konami does have holdings in fitness clubs, pachinko... if they ever had arcades (game centres) then I wouldn't be surprised.
The game looks like it was a cool idea, but it desperately needs per-scanline tilting for a Pilotwings-style perspective. As it is, it's more like D-Force with rotation. |

Neat! The graphics seem reasonable, taking into consideration it's doing real-time scaling and rotation.
The sound is more like circa 1983 though. |

Didn't Sega actually have their own arcade, at least at one point?
Seems that Namco owned the former American arcade chain Aladdin's Castle as well. |

Sega, Namco and Taito all own game centers in Japan. I don't see how Konami owning one would be so out of place, considering they were one of the largest arcade game manufacturers back in the day (and still are to some extent). I don't think they ever did though.
Off-topic, has Espionage (エスピオナージ), the JP version of S.P.Y.: Special Project Y, ever been uncovered? That never made it pass location test in Japan, but for some reason it still got a wide overseas release. |
