From Game Player's Magazine, June 1991, page 70:
If you happen to be one of the first people who bought the Nintendo version of Maniac Mansion, you may have a collector's item. Why? Because due to an oversight, early versions of the game allow you to put the hamster into the microwave. Neither Jaleco nor Nintendo endorses the mistreatment of animals, of course, but somehow it slipped by.
I can't confirm or deny that two versions of the game exist, but I get the feeling that if a hamster-safe version was made, we would have found it before now. |

Yeah, that quote's kinda vague. They speculate that the game may be revised, and seem under the impression that a revision would be a foregone conclusion, but don't actually come out and say that they know that for sure. It also seems that they're speaking on behalf of Jaleco and Nintendo without actually contacting them, as they don't have an actual quote from any person at either of those companies. |

Most of the rumors I've heard lately have had a lot of detail by necessity, they just aren't believable otherwise. Internet Age making everything easily debunkable and all.
Regardless of what we've all read and heard, no one I know claims to have actually played a copy of the game that doesn't let you nuke the hamster. |

Google, what would I do without you?
http://www.crockford.com/wrrrld/maniac.html has the lowdown on MM and Nintendo's standards. I see no removal-of-hamster talk anywhere:
"They didn't object to the nasty stuff that happens to the hamster."

Wasn't it supposed to be something like in the computer version you could nuke it with any character, in the NES version you can only nuke it with Razor and Syd? |

"Sid or Razor can be ordered (by you) to put the hamster in the microwave oven and blow it up." |

I heard talk about an unappropriate statue in an earlier version. What's the deal on that? |

Which censor? The statue or the hamster? Or both? I never knew a proto of Manic Mansion was ever found. Do you know who owns it? |

if you kill one of the characters (via the old jar of pool water in the microwave trick) it will cut to a scene showing your grave outside. But, you arent really dead...only you cant really do much. You can still select the character..and make them walk around and go thru doors...but you cant trade or interact with anything. so its actually very useless, but still neat nonetheless. |
