|
|
Now, before anyone starts, I'm not planning on blasting howdy doody today, allright? I just have a question regarding his tools. A simple, real, don'twannastartafightgoddamnit question.
I've always wondered about the files that he labels "Betas" in his tools... GoodSNES, in particular. Just how many of them are confirmed betas? Everyone here knows that in a project that has so many files, there's bound to be errors, and I think there's been cases of final copies of games being labeled as betas more than once.
Is there a list I can check up on somewhere? Or has someone even tried to separate the real betas from the ones people aren't really sure of? |

Just download all the copies and you'll be sure to probably get one that's mostly right. Oh, wait.. |

I'm curious about this as well. I downloaded the whole set, and half the "betas" wouldn't even load in Snes9x. I dunno if the ROMs were assembled improperly, incorrectly dumped, or just junk. Also, nearly all of the betas I tried that did work seemed to be identical to their released counterparts. I'm guessing a lot of them were dumped from store demo or final review carts and mislabeled as "beta" by whoever released them. |

If you say the games won't load, it could be a header issue. I know people say that headers don't matter, but I believe that SNES9X is pickier on that regard since you can adjust the header parameters manually while loading the game. Hirom, lorom, etcetera.
I still think more than half of the games are bad dumps, but now, there's no way to confirm that. |

howdy doody is a pretty cool guy (and major contributor to my site), but the fact is that a lot of "good" roms would not even run in an emulator if the emulator was 100% complete. Goodtools are only good to catalog what rom you have, and is not a good way to determine whether or not it is actually "good". howdy doody said himself that he never intended goodtools to be used for anything more. |

Well, in that case, the name is very misleading. |

Hey, it's called "GoodSNES" - not "GreatSNES" or StupendousSNES" :P |

Personally, I think it should've been called "PokéSNES."
I don't think any further explanation is necessary. |
